POPSScience of Search: How to Make Out, or Levitate How-to searches also reveal our aspirations. Comprising 12% of the instructional searches were those questions geared towards self improvement: how to "lose weight," "gain weight," "make money," and, for those truly in search of instant gratification, "make money fast." On the darker side, over 9.5% of the searches were for illicit or illegal activities, with marijuana use figuring high on the list ("how to grow marijuana," "grow pot," "grow weed") but also some very concerning questions: "how to commit suicide," "how to make meth," even "how to make a bomb." We apparently feel comfortable enough with our computers and the Internet to query just about anything. Search continues to grow in importance as we sift through the mountain of information available to us. As the growth of "how to" searches increases, its clear that we are turning to search engines as sources of knowledge and insight into getting things done.

POPS100 Greatest TV Quotes and Catchphrases Clipped 30/100, more at the source. These are the favorite lines that have entered into the everlasting human lexicon. The 70s are heavily represented (e.g. "Smile, you're on `Candid Camera'"). Saturday Night Live provided many favorites through the years (e.g."Well, isn't that special?", Dana Carvey as the Church Lady), but recent additions are relatively sparse — and somewhat lame — (e.g. "Bam!" from Emeril Lagasse, "Emeril Live"). A series of shows on TV Land will commemorate the list in mid-December. What TV pop culture quotes and catchphrases from the past do you think should have made the list? - Plastic.com

POPSGoogle tells you what to have for dinner Cookin’ With Google allows you to provide a list of ingredients (what’s in the fridge?) and get back a list of recipes that Google finds for you. This tool doesn’t require a Google API key, so use it as often as you like. Judy Hourihan had the great idea of Cookin’ with Google. Thanks Judy! Right now Cookin’ with Google will find you recipes in several different categories, including: * General * Vegan/Vegetarian * WorldWide Cuisine * Atkins Diet * Diabetic * Seafood * Crockpot

POPSBeloit College's Archiving Of Our Mindsets "Each August since 1998, as faculty prepare for the academic year, Beloit College in Wisconsin has released the Beloit College Mindset List. A creation of Beloit’s Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it looks at the cultural touchstones that have shaped the lives of today’s first-year students." I only included 20 numbers from the 75 items of the year's mindset list. :) There is also an archive of mindset lists from previous years on the website. See if it covers your college freshman batch.
