    Quotes from Voltaire
    overture
    by overture  6-11-2007    7
Voltaire was a French Enlightenment writer, essayist, deist and philosopher known for his wit, philosophical sport, and defense of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and the right to a fair trial. He was an outspoken supporter of social reform despite strict censorship laws in France and harsh penalties for those who broke them. A satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize Christian Church dogma and the French institutions of his day. -- From Wikipedia

    Are You REALLY A Woman?
    debbyski
    by debbyski  7-30-2008    9
"The tests never unmasked a man posing as a woman, but they did turn up several athletes who were born with genetic defects that made them appear — according to lab results, at least — to be men. In 1967, the Polish sprinter Ewa Klobukowska was barred from the sport because she failed the chromosomal test, even though she had passed the nude test a year earlier. In the 1980s, the Spanish hurdler Maria José Martínez Patino was disqualified because the test revealed, to her surprise, that she was born with a Y chromosome. Her eligibility was reinstated in 1988. The practice came under increasing criticism in the 1990s by doctors, scientists and athletes who argued that the tests were not just invasive, but were also bad science."

The painful life of a football player...years later.
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  12-18-2009    2
Though i suppose it shouldn't be surprising, to read the stories of former professional football players - who can barely move and live in constant pain - is extremely disturbing. It seems disgusting that the NFL has turned their back on them. I'm a huge football fan, but i have to admit that i feel uncomfortable being a fan of a sport that will end up leaving so many men practically disabled.

Based on the team’s findings, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, has ruled that Pistorius is eligible to participate in International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) sanctioned competitions. If he qualifies for the 2008 Beijing games, Pistorius would be the first disabled athlete ever to run against able-bodied athletes in an Olympic event.

Harry Patch, Last WW1 Link Dies at 111: war is organised murder

War is organised murder. (And a spectator sport for fiends). <<<I hope that is not the end of him. His voice and body may have died, but his words on war should live on, resonating strongly, nearly a century after those Flanders cannon were finally silenced. It would be the best legacy for Harry and his generation. >>> (conclusion of article by last journalist to interview Private Patch).

    Danes Explain Why Obama Failed
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  10-3-2009    7
I don't quite see it exactly as the article expresses it. The people I have talked to, don't see it as Obama failing, as much as America in general, failing. Obama's (USA's) appearance here left many with a sense, that America somehow felt entitled to get the games, merely because they wanted them. Now they seem "in shock" because their wishes weren't accommodated, obviously disregarding the fact that Rio deserved to win. I am very happy on behalf of Rio and I think they're gonna put on a hell of a show. .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGfJ0_KMiro
