    Wish You Were Beer
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  10-18-2009    12
Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, it is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver. I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. Remember: "I" before "E," except in Budweiser. I drink only to make my friends seem interesting. Everybody should believe in something; I believe I'll have another drink. Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXdNnw99-Ic

Red wine's resveratrol may help battle obesity
    Mohir
    by Mohir  6-16-2008
In the cell-based study, they found that resveratrol inhibited the pre-fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells. Also, resveratrol hindered fat storage. Most interesting, according to Fischer-Posovszky, was that resveratrol reduced production of certain cytokines (interleukins 6 and 8), substances that may be linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as diabetes and clogged coronary arteries. Also, resveratrol stimulated formation of a protein known to decrease the risk of heart attack. Obesity decreases this substance, called adiponectin.

Chimps Agree: A Bird in Hand Is Worth Two in the Bush
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  6-18-2008
This tendency held true for both groups, despite different rearing histories, suggesting that their disinclination to barter is innate, says Sarah Brosnan of Georgia State University, the lead researcher in this study. The chimps’ risk-averse behavior, Brosnan speculates, is attributable to a lack of language skills. “If one chimp could say to another, ‘OK, you crack nuts while I hunt meat, and then we’ll trade,’ they’d be able to specialize and have a developed economy,” Brosnan says.

    Peaches And Worry
    debbyski
    by debbyski  5-20-2009    2
"Then images of the starving artist enter my thinking: to grow beautiful peaches or nectarines and die poor -- but having created art! Ultimately, I begin to take myself much too seriously. This is just a peach. I'm just a farmer. Obsessive behavior is part of caring, all part of a richness at harvest, all natural and wonderfully human. I can taste emotions in the summer. You can't have wonderful flavor without risk and worry. Without the bitter and sour you can't taste the sweet and savory."

Mental Illness and the 80% Genetic Myth
    chestnut501
    by chestnut501  7-5-2009
"Music is not melody versus rhythm, wine is not grapes versus alcohol and we are not environment versus genes. We are their sum, their product and their expression. They dance together and we are their performance, but neither is an adversary. The art of understanding this elegant ballet is complex and arcane but you may never realise this from reading the quoted results of genetic studies, because the extent to which a trait is heritable, that is, accounted for by genetics, is usually expressed as a simple percentage.
