POPSThe challenge for teachers of technology The author draws a good analogy between lessons learned from driving-- the limitations of memorizing routes vs. getting lost and discovering the lay of the land--and lessons learned from teaching. He discusses "the value of education founded in general principles, rather than a rote memorization of steps to accomplish specific goals."

POPSEngineers Design Affordable, Clean Car Using Existing Technology and Fuels The technology to build cleaner vehicles is already available. Now we need much more pressure on the automakers to implement the technology. Why is there so much resistance? “The automakers are sticking to their traditional ‘can’t do’ philosophy,” said David Friedman, clean vehicles research director at UCS. “Years ago they cried the sky was falling when they were required to install seat belts and airbags. Now, instead of building cleaner vehicles like the Vanguard, they’re fighting global warming pollution laws in the courts. To get the job done, they should bench their lawyers and call in the engineers.”

POPSDiesel-electric hybrids being developed for Wal-Mart trucks I'm trying to imagine how quiet and clean these engines will be as the big trucks wait at stoplights in the towns and cities across America. Kudos to Wal-Mart (never thought I'd say that!) for ordering this new technology.

POPSLog on, drop out, cash in... Top techies who left school "Of course, for every dropout's success story there are untold stories of disappointment and failure. Nathan Ensmenger, a University of Pennsylvania history professor who tracks the Silicon Valley labor market, says youngsters often are lured by high starting salaries and low barriers to entry. But not everyone can hit a startup grand slam, leaving many with fewer options as they try to climb the corporate ladder that quickly tops out for techies without a degree. "If we were shooting a movie of this, there would be a disclaimer at the bottom, 'Do not attempt this at home,' " said Paul Graham, a startup investor and founder of Y Combinator. "It's an extreme example of a fundamental, underlying trend: If you can program, you don't have to play by the rules." "We discourage people from starting startups too young. You're not a loser if you finish college first."
