When That Good Night Falls, We Want Our Stars to Shimmer
    gingembre
    by gingembre  5-26-2008    1
News of Senator Edward Kennedy's malignant brain tumor and its media coverage prompted these insights into the disadvantages of being a celebrity when tragedy strikes. "We have a strange kind of intimacy with celebrities. Once they reach a certain level of fame, we tend to believe that we are owed something...They pay for the adulation, the success, even the so-called free stuff with their privacy." "But when the news is especially harsh -- when the diagnosis is deadly -- we realize we don't want to know that much, after all. After getting a look at the tragic facts, we want a "luckiest man alive" speech. Celebrities are supposed to amuse, enlighten, appall and outrage. They can make us envious. But they are never supposed to make us cry." :(

Middle age truly depressing says study
    pokkets
    by pokkets  1-30-2008
They were amazed at the constancy, but it is not inevitable. The fact that it is the half way point may be a factor, and the fact that many dreams of youth are no longer possible eg too old to repay a home loan. No doubt there are those who have had more realistic dreams. Experience can shatter many illusions. There is the bright side in that after a point people can realize they are too old to dream, and start living each day as though it is a bonus. What worries me is after being classified as depression, there can be a determination to classify it as an 'illness' or a 'syndrome' that can be remedied with medication, to the point where people become depressed without the medications (which can often be addictive) Often the only thing that is needed is time. After realizing you're 'over the hill' it is a matter of accepting the inevitable, and making the most of the ride.

10 Minutes Of Staring at Boobs Daily Prolongs Man's Life by 5 Years...
    Mohir
    by Mohir  12-2-2007    18
"Sexual excitement gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation. There's no question: Gazing at large breasts makes men healthier. Our study indicates that engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of stroke and heart attack in half." said Weatherby, who even recommended that men aged over 40 should spend at least 10 minutes daily admiring breasts sized "D-cup" or larger. She said that this was as healthy as going to the gym for 30 minutes daily and prolonged a man's life by five years.

The ends do justify the means when it comes to C. difficile treatment! :D This is really good news for those suffering from the debilitating bacterial infection that has killed thousands of people in the last few years. "The procedure involves getting a close relative of the patient, such as a sibling, to donate several days-worth of stool. Louie tests the stool for diseases such as hepatitis and HIV and then mixes it with saline to create liquid feces. He then administers the stool to the patient through an enema." "Louie said the technique allows good bacteria from the transplanted stool to reduce the number of C. difficile bacteria in the intestines and to restore normal intestinal function." Don't poo-poo the technique.

Giuliani is one of the most outrageous liars I have ever been aware of in politics in my entire life. And believe me, I have known some big liars. But none of them could so fluently pull facts and figures out of their ass the way Rudy can and expect everyone to believe what he says, simply because he says it forcefully. Paul Krugman elaborates far better than I could, and he asks a very urgent question. Why is Rudy's blatant pattern of lying and smearing not mentioned in the media as a character issue? Is it not as important as Edward's haircut, or Hillary's cackle?

I can tell you from experience, not only couldn't my mother name the drugs she was taking, she was not taking them as prescribed. I investigated this when her behavior first started to change and show signs of dementia. Why is this important? Is my belief that if my mother had been taking her hypertension drugs as prescribed she would be much healthier today and the onset and development of her Alzheimer's might have been delayed.

Counterfeit impotence pills and diet drugs are cruel enough for the user's psyche, but what kind of person sinks so low as to substitute brick dust and boric acid for pain medicine? Apparently these counterfeit medicines are meant for Central Europe and Russia, not Finland. Finland is just a convenient conduit.

Dr blogs own malpractice trial, loses
    jklugman
    by jklugman  5-31-2007
Pediatrician Robert Lindeman started an anonymous blog, "drfleablog", where he talked about pediatrics issues. He was sued for failing to diagnose diabetes in a little boy who eventually died from it. In his blog, he would talk about the malpractice suit and make fun of the plaintiffs and the jury. Since he knew that malpractice cases hinge on what juries think of the doctor's moral character, the revelation that he was the author of the blog meant that his asshole nature would be exposed to the jury and his case would be sunk.

Web shopping: lifeline from exiles to family in Zimbabwe

"Apart from food and petrol, these websites offer generators to survive Harare’s 20-hour power cuts, satellite TV subscriptions, mobile phone time and even the chance to pay for medical check-ups." "Zimbabwe, under the rule of Robert Mugabe, now has the world’s lowest life expectancy, and people say they are living “an 001 type of life”, explaining: “0 breakfast, 0 lunch, 1 dinner.” Mukuru.com allows petrol to be ordered by text message, enabling the recipient to collect vouchers. Websites also offer generators to survive power outages, satellite TV subscriptions, mobile phone time, payments for medical check-ups, supplies of insulin for diabetics, and other medicines and medical procedures. Dr. Chireka: “The situation in Zimbabwe is critical,” he said. “If you go into hospital in Zimbabwe, it’s like going to a bring-a-bottle party: you have to bring your own medicine, your own drip, everything. Doctors are on strike. I have no doubt thousands of people are dying unnecessarily"
