POPSFight the Right-Wing Smears Sad to say, I know and receive email from people (including relatives) who have no problem forwarding right-wing lies and racist propaganda about Obama. I went to this site to have a good source of information to refute the hate emails and replied to all who received, and sent, the smear emails I have received. I encourage you to do the same if you have the misfortune to be sent trashy lies about Barack Obama. To say nothing is to condone the sending and receiving of such emails.

POPS Mexicans Protest Canadian Mining Company
"Not only does the mine require an estimated 32 million litres of water per day, there are serious concerns that the cyanide will contaminate the aquifers, says hydrologist Mario Martínez. "There are cyanide heap leach pads (large pools) right on top of an aquifer." "Once the ore is removed from the Cerro de San Pedro pit, it is trucked two km to specially prepared outdoor pads, where a solution of water and cyanide is sprayed on the ore to dissolve the gold and silver out of the rock. The water is treated to remove the precious metals and recover some of the cyanide. "spent ore" is removed and piled into hills already more than 20 metres high "Sixteen tonnes of sodium cyanide are being used daily, and there is a great risk it could seep into the aquifer" The mining company assures that the cyanide is managed in a closed circuit and that the surface of the leaching pools are covered by special plastic membranes, injected with air and monitored by leak detectors.

POPSJane Goodall: We Need A New Mindset "We should admit that the infliction of suffering on beings who are capable of feeling is ethically problematic and that the amazing human brain should set to work to find new ways of testing and experimenting that will not involve the use of live, sentient beings." "Her call comes as the European Commission prepares to publish draft legislation to update the EU’s animal experiments directive (Directive 86/609 EEC). The existing law is out of date (over 20 years old), with hundreds of thousands of animals currently receiving no protection at all." "Dr Goodall was joined by biomedical researchers, MEPs and animal protectionists at a Replace Animal Experiments in Europe event in Brussels. Event organisers, the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research and the Humane Society International (HSI), are spearheading a campaign to accelerate European efforts to replace animal experiments with more ethical and reliable methods."

POPSCanada exports asbestos...WTH? "Canada is the only developed nation still producing asbestos, called a deadly threat by the International Labour Organization, the World Health Organization, the International Association for Cancer Research and many more health agencies."

POPSKangaroo Abuser Cites Man's 'Dominion' A reward has been offered if anyone knows anything about Tyson's whereabouts. As for the laws, the defense and the cruelty itself? Where to begin? Zoos in Canada only have regulations for native animals such as bears or coyotes. Keepers have no rules for exotic animals, including lions, tigers or kangaroos. "McElroy was brought to court for her manner with native animals and unfortunately it has nothing to do with Tyson's well-being," she said.

POPSHuckabee: cover up for son's cruel deed reflects dad's ethics Mike Huckabee allegedly covered up for his son David's cruelty to a dog. Do we want a person with Huckabee's lack of ethics in the White House? A bit more from the article (but please read even more at the source): "David Huckabee did not respond to requests for comment. (In April of this year, he was arrested—and paid a fine—when he forgot to remove a loaded gun from his carry-on luggage at Little Rock airport.) His father told NEWSWEEK THAT his son did not engage in "intentional torture." "There was a dog that apparently had mange and was absolutely, I guess, emaciated."A campaign official says David "regrets" the incident and notes that he later made Eagle Scout. Congrats on attaining Eagle Scout rank, David.

POPSJudge Orders White House to hold Emails Bush Administration lawyers are arguing strongly against the decision. They protest the decision, of a federal judge, when it should be remembered that Bush owes his Presidency to a Supreme court decision, after the 2000 election. Maybe they want it to be taken to the Supreme Court. They know some people there.

POPSTripping over a shifting ethical line
Has it always been this way? No. Read on: "The agency's travel patterns during the Bush administration, detailed in internal agency documents, differ from those of the Clinton era. Ann Brown, who served as chairman from 1994 to 2001, traveled only at the expense of the agency or of media organizations that sponsored appearances where she announced product recalls" "Some say the commission's approach to gift travel points to a Bush administration philosophy that favors engaging corporations in policymaking that affects them. "This administration apparently has taken the position that speaking and appearing before the regulated community, even where there are enforcement matters pending, does not create the appearance of a conflict," said Kenneth Gross, an ethics lawyer at Skadden, Arps."These are difficult and subjective lines to be drawn," he said. "Prior administrations have drawn that line in a different place." "Gift Travel" How can this be ethical? :?

POPSMillions of Missing Birds, Vanishing in Plain Sight "In our everyday economic behavior, we seem determined to discover whether we can live alone on earth. E.O. Wilson has argued eloquently and persuasively that we cannot, that who we are depends as much on the richness and diversity of the biological life around us as it does on any inherent quality in our genes. Environmentalists of every stripe argue that we must somehow begin to correlate our economic behavior — by which I mean every aspect of it: production, consumption, habitation — with the welfare of other species. This is the premise of sustainability. But the very foundation of our economic interests is self-interest, and in the survival of other species we see way too little self to care. We look around us, expecting the rest of the world’s occupants to adapt to the changes that we have caused, when, in fact, we have the right to expect adaptation only from ourselves."

POPSTrifecta of misery: unnecessary, unhealthy, unkind...foie gras Let's ban foie gras from the menu and serve "la muqueuse du jour" instead, at $24 per serving. Doesn't that make your mouth water? As the author of this article states so well: " Not long ago it was common to beat horses unmercifully, or to bag puppies and kittens and drown them in the river. A slow-dawning enlightenment birthed the idea that brutality to animals is wrong." "It didn't lead to rampant vegetarianism. It didn't give animals the vote." "Neither will banning unnecessary, unhealthy, unkind foie gras."

POPSCall for G8 to help stem corruption in Africa: Zambia President Mwanawasa's administration is promoting private sector development for third world countries, but needs help to stop corrupt leaders from stealing the aid and other monies needed for development. This is something that has frustrated me for a long time. So much money has been given to aid African countries, with the goal of delivering food, water, healthcare and education to the people and hopefully help them become self-sufficient, yet time and again corrupt "leaders" steal the money. When I read this news article today I was relieved to learn that ethical leaders in Africa are also frustrated by the corruption, and that they are trying to find ways to thwart it. Hopefully the G8 have the ethics needed to heed the plea and do the right thing.

POPSResuscitation experiments on incapacitated "Even if there are family members present, they know their loved one is dying. The ambulance is there. The sirens are going off. You can't possibly imagine gaining a meaningful informed consent from someone under those circumstances." An excellent motivation to prepare a living will.

POPSChickens Are People Too! *LOL* I've had lots of pet chickens. My last one, Molly was a fiery little "Red Dwarf" with an awesome attitude! She was queen of the roost even over all the cats. Aah, I loved that funny hen. *LOL* Anyway! I'm not a vegan. I believe chickens are "meant" to be eaten by us, just as we one day will be food for others, be it worms or Azaleas. (or White Pointers, if you're an Aussie. Ha ha!) The point is respect. Treat animals with dignity and respect and be thankful for the nourishment they provide. We're all just part of the food chain. Don't waste or squander, but be thankful for the food you are lucky to have. (Not all are as lucky as us, to be able to eat every day.) Check out all the cool comments from fellow clippers on the clip about plants having feelings , for some really cool thoughts on consciousness and awareness and interconnectedness. Mind-expanding! Molly died of old age, by the way...

POPSCanadian Physician Exodus Benefits United States, Hurts Canada Does it seem to you, too, that everything is always about MONEY?!!! Does greed always supersede ethics? Canadian doctors are not paid poorly, except in relation to doctors in the US, so why do they abandon the people who supported their education in the expected return for medical care from them?

POPSBurger King Adopting Animal Welfare Initiatives! "Burger King executives said the move was driven by their desire to stay ahead of consumer trends and to encourage farmers to move into more humane egg and meat production." “We want to be doing things long before they become a concern for consumers,” Mr. Grover said. “Like a hockey player, we want to be there before the puck gets there.” "While Burger King’s initial goals may be modest, food marketing experts and animal welfare advocates said yesterday that the shift would put pressure on other restaurant and food companies to adopt similar practices." “I think the whole area of social responsibility, social consciousness, is becoming much more important to the consumer,” said Bob Goldin, executive vice president of Technomic, a food industry research and consulting firm. “I think that the industry is going to see that it’s an increasing imperative to get on that bandwagon.” It's a start! :-)

POPSDoctor sacrificed dog for salespeople This doctor's unethical actions, legal or not, demonstrate his lack of empathy and respect for animals and life. The term sociopath comes to mind. I know people like him, people who insist that they have the right to maim and kill animals in the interest of science and who refuse to use readily available alternatives. They get their jollies playing God with the lives of innocent creatures.

POPSCongressman Doolittle Plans to Develop Ethics When he barely beat his Democrat opponent in a solidly Republican district, Jack Abramoff's good friend John Doolittle realized that he might have been more unethical than even staunch Republicans could tolerate. Poor Julie Doolittle--not only has she lost financial support from Jack Abramoff, but now she can't continue to skim 15% of John's campaign funds as payment for her fundraising activities.

POPSJewish Opinion Divided Over New Hitler Comedy "Hitler was not just a humorous figure with a tragic childhood ... he doesn't deserve any mitigating circumstances or pity. The mass murder of millions of people in Europe can't be separated from Hitler's own person," Kramer said. I agree.

POPSRep. Baron Hill: Bush's new Iraq policy is a mistake Encouraging news from U.S. Congressman Baron Hill, D-Ind. Damned refreshing to read his views and the plans for energy independence, healthcare and ethics reforms, and higher minimum wage ! He is honest enough to point out the hypocrisy surrounding the minimum wage issue: "It's been 10 years since we increased the minimum wage, but in that time Congress has increased its salary by $35,000."
