POPSGermany's role in managing Peru's jungle forests It's good to know that Germany is helping Peru prepare for climate change in the jungle by supporting Peru's new Environment ministry and financing projects for sustainable management of jungle forests. Maybe there is some hope for saving the jungle from loggers bent on exploitation and destruction of these sensitive areas for their own economic gain. And hopefully it is not too little too late.

POPSVote With Your Fork Vote against dependence on oil. Vote for lower health care costs. Vote against all disposable bags at the grocery store. Vote for healthy food choices at restaurants. Vote against unhealthy food choices. Vote for locally grown produce. Vote against the inhumane treatment of animals. Vote for organically-grown food. Vote against eating on the run. Vote for smaller portions. Vote against food waste. If you get frustrated at the current food environment, do something about it. Every dollar you spend, every food choice you make, and every meal you eat is an opportunity to vote for what you believe in. We can't change the way our food environment is structured overnight, but we can make a difference three times a day by voting with our forks.

POPSClipmarks now available for Firefox 3 Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that we released a new version of clipmarks (version 3.5) that supports the just-released Firefox3. We made some real nice improvements to the orange lines so they should more accurately outline elements on the page to clip. If you don't have the latest version of clipmarks installed, you can get it here https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1407. There's a review section on that page, so if you have anything nice to say, don't hesitate :) FYI...we're getting loads of new clippers today, so if you get a chance, check out the newest clips section and welcome some new users with some pops and comments.

POPSNew Canandian National Park This is so exciting. We will have another beautiful space to preserve for future generations. I can't wait to be able to go up and see this.

POPSThe Selling Out of Canada's Polar Bears Now even the Nunavut people who offer up already beleaguered polar bears to "sport" hunters for the money are finally admitting that their polar bear population is declining...but they still won't agree that climate change is the cause of the decline. I suppose that it really is an inconvenient truth that they would rather not acknowledge. But rather than stop the hunting they are just reducing the quota of bears to be slaughtered. They are lobbying the US government to try to keep the polar bear off the endangered species list for economic reasons. So much for the myth of the noble savage!

POPSBan The Plastic Bag Bangladesh slapped an outright ban on all polythene bags in 2002 after they were found to have been the main culprit during the 1988 and 1998 floods that submerged two-thirds of the country. Discarded bags had choked the country's drainage systems. Nylon fishing nets, fishing line, bags, 6-pack rings etc, kill hundreds of thousands of animals every year and will continue to do so for hundreds, if not thousands of years to come. Horrible, panicked and painful deaths by drowning, suffocation or internal damage. If Bangladesh can ban the plastic bag and get by, surely so could we!

POPSchildren lost the right to roam in 4 generations The article reflects our changing habits and our relationship with our environment. I agree completely about the necessity of outdoors, nature, plants, our good ol' earth. Ever been fishing? To a quiet golf course? A hike? How does it rejuvenate you? I am working on making my backyard a kind of restful, naturalist place for me to go and be refreshed.

POPSThe truth about recycling Far too much valuable info here to fit in a clip, so go to the source for interesting discussions of the history of recycling, current status, innovations and concerns about what happens to recyclables being shipped to China and other developing nations. China is now the largest importer of recyclable materials in the world! The explanation of how single stream collection of recyclables works is fascinating. I was not aware of all the new technology being employed to sort and separate recyclable materials. The section on the future of recycling discusses the need for product design to take into account recycling of the product materials to create "closed-loop" cycles where there is no waste. Sustainable packaging emphasizes the use of renewable, recycled and non-toxic source materials to benefit the environment and cut costs. Wal-Mart is jumping on this bandwagon. "Waste is really a design flaw."

POPSBiosphere 2 Sold to Home Developer...but read on... The University of Arizona may lease the terrarium for large-scale climate experiments. azcentral adds: "Pinal County Supervisor Lionel Ruiz, whose district includes the Biosphere 2 land, said the development will be good for the area but must be approached cautiously and be well-planned. "I don't want to see just a whole bunch of rooftops from Tucson all the way to Oracle," he said. "We want to see sustained communities and some open spaces and wildlife corridors. Like anything else, if they come in with proper plans, it'll make it a plus." I like the way this guy thinks!

POPSCompanies working to pare down waste: greener packaging
Good news from Berry Plastics in Evansville, Indiana, and Wal-Mart. Berry Plastics says that redesigning packaging to reduce bulk is becoming such a trend that they have hired an engineer devoted to repackaging projects. And Wal-Mart plans to use info from their "packaging scorecard" to make decisions on purchasing merchandise, with the goal of creating "zero waste" by recycling, reusing or otherwise breaking down product waste. So the greening of Wal-Mart may provide the financial incentive for companies to reduce their packaging, as they compete with one another for either Wal-Mart's goodwill or for consumer acclaim in their own right. This is just what the environmental movement needs--a push from the consumer product companies and vendors to save money and help the environment at the same time, with plenty of media fanfare to promote their efforts and boost their images. Their bottom line matters most, of course, but now it is tied to benefiting the environment.

POPSWhy individual efforts are only part of the solution It is discouraging, isn't it?! We all need to do our part, but we need more than individual efforts to protect our environment. Otherwise it's like bailing water out of a rapidly sinking rowboat with a teaspoon. Every little bit helps, but the overall prognosis is bleak.

POPSOntario to reduce plastic bag use by half Although not as extreme as San Francisco and the Manitoba town of Leaf Rapids , both of which have banned plastic shopping bags, the province of Ontario is taking steps to reduce the number of plastic bags used by 50% to help the environment.

POPSE-Zone...a new environmental website for elementary students Another great new environmental website from the Canadian government; this time for elementary students. The Ministry of the Environment has created this website for elementary students "to explain the challenges facing our planet and inspire them to take actions that protect the environment - all within an interactive media experience that includes music clips and videos. "Obviously.ca is unique. Most environmental government websites bombard you with information and boring statistics," said Sandra Giangioppo, a student at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute in Toronto. "But obviously.ca uses creative techniques such as video clips and interesting facts to grab your attention and really help you understand the important environmental issues out there. It is a very innovative and cool approach to increasing environmental issues awareness."

POPSDiesel-electric hybrids being developed for Wal-Mart trucks I'm trying to imagine how quiet and clean these engines will be as the big trucks wait at stoplights in the towns and cities across America. Ahhhh. What an improvement! More fuel efficient truck engines promise to help the environment and will help Wal-Mart save money. Kudos to Wal-Mart (never thought I'd say that!) for ordering this new technology.
