POPSMissing kids found via Facebook Good news in the struggle to find missing children: Facebook. As of February 2008 Facebook had about 734,000 South African members. As the Missing Children SA group founder noted, the chance of finding more kids will grow as the group grows bigger. I don't know how many other countries are using social networking sites like Facebook to look for missing children, but since this is an effective means of finding them I hope that it is widely adopted.

POPSAncient Maya sacrificed boys not virgin girls "It was thought that the gods preferred small things and especially the rain god had four helpers that were represented as tiny people," said de Anda. "So the children were offered as a way to directly communicate with Chaac," he said Archeologists previously believed young female virgins were sacrificed because the remains, which span from around 850 AD until the Spanish colonization, were often found adorned with jade jewelry. It is difficult to determine the sex of skeletons before they are fully matured, said de Anda, but he believes cultural evidence from Mayan mythology would suggest the young victims were actually male

POPSIdentical twins lead to leukaemia breakthrough
The twins have been crucial to the new research, as they are genetically identical but one has developed cancer whereas the other has not. The scientists found that the girls’ blood contains genetically abnormal cells known as pre-leukaemic cells. These were formed by a mutation known as translocation, in which two genes fuse to create an abnormal new one. This random event happened in a single cell in one of the twins while they were still in the womb. As the twins shared a placenta, the original mutant’s daughter cells populated the blood of both sisters. The discovery will help doctors to monitor Isabella, and children like her, so that further genetic damage in her pre-leukaemic stem cells is caught early. By the time she is 14, her pre-leukaemic stem cells should have died naturally. “Pre-leukaemic cells are still evident, so the sword of Damocles is still hanging there,” Dr Ancliff said. “Hopefully, we will see them disappear.” (Times)

POPSLet's play a game. Laugh! Learn! Be Happy! Game Rules: All one need do is answer the following questions honestly and if one chooses, play the game with others and discuss your answers thoughtfully and with care.* Remember: This is a game--a thought game. You are merely thinking hypothetically how you determine your answers to the questions. You only have to think temporarily 'what if there is no god.' After you have answered the questions, consider how your thoughts and behaviors change or do not change based on whether you assume the existence of a god. IT'S ONLY A GAME!! Laugh! Learn! Be Happy!

POPSDrugs Not the Answer Giving drugs to people with a mental health problem is not the magic bullet the Pharma companies want us to believe. We all look for instant cures, but maybe the roots of mental distress lie in culture itself?

POPSFirstborn Children Are the Cleverest Be sure to read the rest of the article; it is quite fascinating. It's also interesting to note that one of the related articles listed on the side is titled "Smarter People Are No Better Off"!

POPSchildren lost the right to roam in 4 generations The article reflects our changing habits and our relationship with our environment. I agree completely about the necessity of outdoors, nature, plants, our good ol' earth. Ever been fishing? To a quiet golf course? A hike? How does it rejuvenate you? I am working on making my backyard a kind of restful, naturalist place for me to go and be refreshed.

POPSI'm So Happy To Be Childless A little talked about subject, voluntary childlessness. I, for one, do NOT live a life compatible with (two-legged) children and I actually like it that way!! I'm glad more women are beginning to speak out and break the "taboo" of not wanting children.

POPSWatch the anti-smoking ad deemed too controversial This is a harsh film, yes, but definitely gets its point across. Smoking is one of the only "personal liberties' in this country that directly harms the people around you. Which right is more important? The right of the smoker to do what they want to their own body, or the right of the second-hand smoker not to be exposed to that harm. As someone with asthma and allergies, I know where I stand on this one. I don't completely agree with this ad, as I feel that the damage done by abuse is orders of magnitude greater than that done by second-hand smoke, but I do believe that it is a form of abuse nontheless. What's your opinion?

POPSTwins in school: same classroom or not?... Who decides? I like what Nate Bota (last photo) had to say: "Nate Bota, 16, shared classes with his fraternal twin brother Zach until they were in fifth grade at Pleasant Hills Middle School. He thinks kids should have some input on class placement along with parents." "I know in elementary school I wanted to be class, but if someone has a dad who is all about independence and wants to split them up maybe that's not what the kids really want and they don't get a say in it," Nate said. "Definitely through middle school and high school, I liked being away from him in classes. We have one or two classes together now, which isn't bad. But I don't want to be around him all day because when we go home I'm still around him." The kids should have a say. Why is that not obvious to the adults?

POPSWhen to have a child, if ever: The impact in later life
The results of this research: "Early mothers were the least satisfied and most depressed of all four groups, while delayed or late mothers were the most satisfied with their lives and the happiest." "All other things being equal, the childless women were about as satisfied and happy with their lives as the on-time mothers." "In mid-life, being married or having a partner has a greater impact on a woman's well-being than whether or not she has children" This study suggests that childless women are just as likely to experience psychological well-being later in life as women who have children when they are between 19 and 24, and end up happier than women who have children before age 19, so having children is no guarantee of greater happiness in your old age. Motherhood isn't likely to make you happier later in life unless you delay having children until age 25 or after. It also points to our need for loving relationships as we age in order to feel happy.

POPSGot any nude photos of your baby? Shred them. Now! Several people, all of whom I'd objectively call "innocent," have been investigated by the FBI, humiliated, arrested, and effectively destroyed by scandal when photo-developing and computer-repair shops discovered that they had photographed their young children naked. One father lost custody of his kids for taking a photo of them mooning him. The argument is: "we all have to view innocent photos through the eyes of a pedophile, for the good of the children." Effing scary. I mean, I've taken several pictures of my son in the bathtub, and according to this article, that makes me effectively guilty of child pornography. Better take those shots off of Snapfish.com.

POPSToo Much TV "The landscape has shifted dramatically since 1961, when experts say most children did not watch TV until they were nearly 3 years old. Now, studies suggest that children start watching TV or videos by the time they're 9 months old, on average."

POPSFifty songs for kids that aren't utter crap A handy list. I've always felt that most music marketed at children -- or, rather, marketed at parents as "stuff your children will like" -- insults the intelligence and taste of children and adults.
