POPSA Simple Guide To Public Relations * “No comment” translates into “I’m guilty” as a response to a crisis situation. * Dealing with bad news quickly means it will most likely go away quickly. We have very short attention spans. * What you actually did may not be as bad as what you stand accused of, but there’s a huge difference between the court of public opinion, which will next-to-never believe you were set up, and a court of law. *There is no substitute for a heartfelt apology. *Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. "Everyone knows this stuff. If you ask people around the water cooler what they would do if such-and-such happened to them, unless they have absolutely no grounding in reality, they can usually give you a plausible, socially acceptable response. The problem comes when something bad actually happens to you, and your natural inclination is to bury your head in the sand, hide under your desk or otherwise avoid dealing with it."

POPSWhen Words Fail Thoughts on the importance of being able to communicate effectively with words, and how society can work to prevent violence that results when people haven't been taught to solve conflict with words.

POPSCan't we talk? As a specialist in linguistics, I have studied how the conversational styles of men and women differ. We cannot lump all men or all women into fixed categories. But the seemingly senseless misunderstandings that haunt our relationships can in part be explained by the different conversational rules by which men and women play

POPSWhen it's on the tip of your toungue If a picture paints a thousand words, a metaphor paints a million pictures. I love metaphors,so I just thought I'd do a clip then I figured if it was going to fit I was going to have to be more specific. I am amazed at the way a metaphor can translate ideas between people, that may have been mutually exclusive. The way when there is a completely new concept related, we may be unable to find any direct analogy, but a metaphor can provide enough clues to transmit understanding. It can be a case of I can't explain exactly, but I can show you where to look. The way poets, musicians, artists, writers use metaphors creatively to allow new ideas or emotions to be accepted more easily.

POPSBush denied "Foot in Mouth Award.
I think this is grossly unfair: Bush's regular slips into incoherence, nonsense, non sequiturs, and mashed metaphors deserve first place. "The childrens must be educated," is one of my favorite. And his question: "Is our children learning?" And "As yesterday's positive report card shows, childrens do learn when standards are high and results are measured." The fact that all these "childrens," sentences were about his discredited education program only makes it worse. But it's a tough job, as he pointed out: "My job is a decision-making job, and as a result, I make a lot of decisions. I am the decider," If this is not the Pink Elephant in the room where is the 800-pound gorilla? Perhaps this? “I heard somebody say, ‘Where’s Mandela?’ Well, Mandela’s dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas.” Because, you know, "All of us in America want there to be fairness when it comes to justice." Anybody got any other samples of this dysfunctional use of lan

POPSCanadians paid Bill Clinton $2.5 million last year Great work if you can get it! :D Bill Clinton is such a popular, dynamic speaker that he can command huge fees for his speeches. When he spoke for 45 minutes at a fundraiser for Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center last March in Toronto, to over 1,750 people, he was paid $150K (US), while the event raised nearly $1.3-million (Canadian). So those who employ him get their money's worth.

POPSQUIZ: What American Accent Do You Have? If you think you don't have an accent, think again. This short quiz is a way to find out which dialect of American English you speak. Different regional accents become more prevalent in countries at different times throughout the years for various socio-economic and geographical reasons. These accents come to be perceived as "neutral" or "accent-less" by the majority during these times. For a while, the American dialect sometimes called "Standard Midwestern" has dominated but, like accents themselves, this "standard" constantly evolves. Recently, the spoken aspects of American English have trended westward along with the population center of America. Many features distinct to Northeastern accents (think NYC, Boston) are being replaced in popularity with those from Western accents (think LA) across America. This shift tends to be more prominent the younger the speaker is.

POPSdejargonator: stilted language makes Americans hostile to intellectuals Be sure to give this to all the members of your thesis or dissertation committee to let them know the error of their ways. :D Seriously, the author presents good points in a clear, useful, and entertaining way. Overuse of jargon often does take the fun and interest out of reading academic articles. Yet I believe that we also have to remember that writing clearly should not go so far as to "dumb down" the material to satisfy (spoon-feed) the poorly educated reader.

POPSThe Sarcasm Mark Mulleflupp's Punctuation clip] This is an interesting idea, and this new punctuation mark could definitely have some usefulness, but the great fun of written sarcasm, for me, is in the detection. The element of uncertainty stimulates the brain, and a fine-tuning of one's perception.

POPSAvoid Ad Hominem on Clipmarks Having seen this logical fallacy used on Clipmarks several times, I thought it would be a good idea to point it out to everyone so that we can avoid this in the future.

POPSWhatever Happened to Online Etiquette? Maybe as the Internet becomes as predominant as air, somebody will realize that online behavior isn’t just an afterthought. Maybe, along with HTML and how to gauge a Web site’s credibility, schools and colleges will one day realize that there’s something else to teach about the Internet: Civility 101. Also see: Why are we so nasty (online)?

POPSOffice Spying Now the Law!! Not a problem if you are self-employed, unless you're a strict "play by the rules" person. Of course, if you ARE self-employed and spending a lot of time on personal matters instead of business, then you probably have more pressing matters to worry about than tracking your electronic mail--say, earning enough $ to live on. Why does the federal gov't now REQUIRE U.S. companies to track employee electronic messages & documents???
