POPSThe saddest of Madonna portraits :( It's hard to fathom of the grief of those whose babies are stillborn or die soon after birth. My heart goes out to them. I'm glad to see that these specialty photographers are handling their work with such sensitivity and are not charging the bereaved parents.

POPSMissing kids found via Facebook Good news in the struggle to find missing children: Facebook. As of February 2008 Facebook had about 734,000 South African members. As the Missing Children SA group founder noted, the chance of finding more kids will grow as the group grows bigger. I don't know how many other countries are using social networking sites like Facebook to look for missing children, but since this is an effective means of finding them I hope that it is widely adopted.

POPSToddler Fun--An Easy & Non-Toxic Play Dough Recipe I miss the days of making homemade play dough with my children. Sigh. But if you are still fortunate enough to have little ones to entertain don't pass up the opportunity to mix up a batch of play dough with them. :) This blog is one of my favorites, full of delicious recipes and interesting stories of life in Tanzania. Check it out!

POPSDear Cary...All the beautiful things I believed in are gone
Cary continues... "But we must get jobs or we don't eat. We must do well in school. So we must all agree that this illusory world of important work and money and relationships is the real world...You are being called to join this army of citizens who toil night and day in support of an illusion. You are being called to renounce what you know and who you are. It is sad, but it is also a rite of passage...This shaking thing bound with baling wire and string, this prison routine of paperwork and punishment, this mechanical bird we operate: This is the illusion. What you saw in the woods, the things you make in your mind, those things are closer to what is real. But don't tell anybody. Instead, you have to find ways to embody this vision so that everyone can agree it's not actually real. You have to become a maker of films or pottery. You have to put it in something physical so people can say, Ah, what a nice vase! Let's put some flowers in it! " See source for the entire exchange

POPSCourt says baby can't be named Friday I thought they might have had a good reason. It seems they didn't like the association between Friday, and Robinson Crusoe. I'm not sure Friday was there in the book because Defoe thought Robinson Crusoe needed a servant, but because he needed someone to talk to, and a person like Friday was the most likely to be on a desert island at the time. Imagine Robinson Crusoe as a monologue. The court (Italian) also said that Friday was generally a bad day. The baby was born on a Sunday.

POPSDrugs Not the Answer Giving drugs to people with a mental health problem is not the magic bullet the Pharma companies want us to believe. We all look for instant cures, but maybe the roots of mental distress lie in culture itself?

POPSCanadian child-sex offender to be released on bail?!! Bail for this convicted child-sex offender who is wanted on similar charges now in Thailand??? WTF  If the Canadian jurisprudence system doesn't want to keep this criminal locked up they should send him to Thailand to face the charges against him there. I doubt that the Thai court would release him on bail. Sheesh.

POPSchildren lost the right to roam in 4 generations The article reflects our changing habits and our relationship with our environment. I agree completely about the necessity of outdoors, nature, plants, our good ol' earth. Ever been fishing? To a quiet golf course? A hike? How does it rejuvenate you? I am working on making my backyard a kind of restful, naturalist place for me to go and be refreshed.

POPSGlobal Schoolyard Rhymes: The Shocking Translations! Mon Dieu! I am shocked! Until now I thought that "Alouette" was a happy song! Alouette, gentille Alouette Alouette je te plumerai Alouette, gentille Alouette Alouette je te plumerai Je te plumerai la tête Je te plumerai la tête Et la la tête, et la tête Alouette, Alouette O-o-o-o-oh Alouette, gentille Alouette Alouette je te plumerai It turns out that all of the verses are the same except for the part of the body to be plucked. la tête = the head le nez = the nose les yeux = the eyes le cou = the neck les ailes = the wings le dos = the back les pattes = the legs le queue = the tail Good for learning the parts of the body in French, but quite gruesome nonetheless! Who knew? The Francophones, of course! Many other global schoolyard rhymes with English translations, some more shocking than others, at the source. :D

POPSI'm So Happy To Be Childless A little talked about subject, voluntary childlessness. I, for one, do NOT live a life compatible with (two-legged) children and I actually like it that way!! I'm glad more women are beginning to speak out and break the "taboo" of not wanting children.

POPSWatch the anti-smoking ad deemed too controversial This is a harsh film, yes, but definitely gets its point across. Smoking is one of the only "personal liberties' in this country that directly harms the people around you. Which right is more important? The right of the smoker to do what they want to their own body, or the right of the second-hand smoker not to be exposed to that harm. As someone with asthma and allergies, I know where I stand on this one. I don't completely agree with this ad, as I feel that the damage done by abuse is orders of magnitude greater than that done by second-hand smoke, but I do believe that it is a form of abuse nontheless. What's your opinion?

POPSTwins in school: same classroom or not?... Who decides? I like what Nate Bota (last photo) had to say: "Nate Bota, 16, shared classes with his fraternal twin brother Zach until they were in fifth grade at Pleasant Hills Middle School. He thinks kids should have some input on class placement along with parents." "I know in elementary school I wanted to be class, but if someone has a dad who is all about independence and wants to split them up maybe that's not what the kids really want and they don't get a say in it," Nate said. "Definitely through middle school and high school, I liked being away from him in classes. We have one or two classes together now, which isn't bad. But I don't want to be around him all day because when we go home I'm still around him." The kids should have a say. Why is that not obvious to the adults?

POPSWhen to have a child, if ever: The impact in later life
The results of this research: "Early mothers were the least satisfied and most depressed of all four groups, while delayed or late mothers were the most satisfied with their lives and the happiest." "All other things being equal, the childless women were about as satisfied and happy with their lives as the on-time mothers." "In mid-life, being married or having a partner has a greater impact on a woman's well-being than whether or not she has children" This study suggests that childless women are just as likely to experience psychological well-being later in life as women who have children when they are between 19 and 24, and end up happier than women who have children before age 19, so having children is no guarantee of greater happiness in your old age. Motherhood isn't likely to make you happier later in life unless you delay having children until age 25 or after. It also points to our need for loving relationships as we age in order to feel happy.
