About me
Just monkeying my way through life...

Why I use Clipmarks
Clipmarks helps me find and share news, resources and issues that are important to me, in a friendly format that provides ample opportunities to interact with other clippers. The passing parade of diverse subject matter clipped, popped and commented on by an ever-expanding community of weird and wonderful people from all over the world is a study in human nature that never fails to fascinate me.

Other social bookmarking services may provide a few of the features of Clipmarks, but they lack the visual appeal, the dynamics and the esprit de corp that set Clipmarks apart.

A new approach to creating biological models reveals much more about cellular processes than traditional biological models. The research scientists are excited because they will be able to save laboratory time and resources for their best leads as to how biological systems respond to variation. This could be a real boon to cancer research.

Stop Taking Antioxidant Vitamin Supplements! : study
gingembre
by gingembre  5-10-2007    7
Yikes! Antioxidant vitamin supplements not only won't help you, they will increase your chances of dying of cancer or cardiovascular disease by at least 5%! Note: "Dr. Gluud said these observations were "a huge disappointment," but added that at least it has been discovered. "We must see the positives in this. The question has been thoroughly addressed and we now know the answer — these agents are harmful. The companies selling these anti-oxidant vitamins have been able to dodge the issue for a long time, saying that any negative data has not been comprehensive. They cannot do this any longer. There are lessons to be learnt here. For example, the importance of conducting trials with these agents and publishing the results." "Our data show that anti-oxidant vitamins should not be taken in an effort to prevent illness. People should instead eat a balanced diet and take regular exercise," he said.

" The director for Research -Natural Chemotherapeutics Research Laboratory at the Ministry of health Grace Nambatya Kyeyune on Wednesday that the bark of the plant can also be used as an afrodisiac for men who suffer partial impotence. " It is also known to boost the human immune system and can be used as painkiller," Dr Nambatya said." "The high demand for the plant on the international market is threatening its existence in Africa and Uganda is lucky to have it even if it's in protected areas according to NFA." " Prunus africana is just one of the species of flora in Mabira central forests reserve, a medium altitude moist semi-deciduous forest and the biggest single natural forest block remaining in the central region of Uganda is endowed with." "Mr Mapesa revealed that, "Mabira central forest reserve also has wild robusta coffee, dioscoria tubers, yams and other plants whose economic importance is still under investigation and must therefore not be lost".

A Woman Worthy of Tribute
zasel
by zasel  3-23-2007
Elizabeth Edwards is a woman to be admired. She is facing much uncertainty, pain and God knows what else. But she has decided that her husband's quest for the presidency is so important that she insists on carrying on as long as she is capable of doing so. John Edwards must have been torn between the true deep devotion he has for his wife, and whether or not he should end his campaign. From what I have heard from a person who knows them well, John was totally prepared to ditch the campaign, but his Elizabeth insisted that she wanted to be part of bringing positive change to the country while she still can, and urged her husband to go for it. I have no doubt that if Elizabeth's condition should take a turn for the worse, he will quit his campaign on a dime if necessary to be with her and support her.

"Chemo Brain" Explained?
gingembre
by gingembre  12-4-2006
"Noble and his team are quick to point out that no one should avoid cancer treatment because of these results and that chemotherapy will remain a cornerstone of cancer therapy for the foreseeable future. Instead, they believe that the opportunity for the scientific community is to use this knowledge to develop ways to protect the brain’s cells from these drugs." "Noble and his team exposed several different populations of healthy brain cells as well as multiple human cancer cell lines to clinically relevant levels of three commonly used chemotherapy drugs – carmustine, cisplatin, and cytosine arabinoside. These drugs are used to treat a wide range of cancers, including certain types of breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and, in the case of carmustine, brain tumors. They discovered that these drugs were far more toxic to the healthy brain cells than to cancer cells...
