POPSThe Greying of Canada Will there be a national strategy to cope with the massive numbers of aging Canadians or creation of a national home-care program for seniors? "The older we get, it seems, the longer we want to live – and, indeed, are living. Like almost every other developed country, Canada is greying, big-time, as the population bulge known as baby boomers closes in on senior status, with the first wave turning 65 in 2011. They will live longer than their forebears; not only has Canadian life expectancy doubled in the past century, to 82 for men and 85 for women, but many more of us will live to be 100." "I tell old people: you have to pay attention to what you like, what gives you pleasure. I love clothes. I love food. I still cut out recipes even though I can't cook any more. I love to read. If you love reading, you've got it for life. I'm grateful to my friends and my children. I know there are grand gardens around the city but I couldn't be happier with my little garden."

POPSTravel Alberta To See These Unique Attractions! When you are making your vacation plans, check out what Alberta has to offer: "Alberta offers a rare treat for the seasoned globetrotter who's craving something new. A seemingly endless expanse of bitumen-laden sands — coupled with the powerful scent of oil from refineries wafting through the hazy air — makes Northern Alberta a truly one-of-a-kind destination. " "some of the unique attractions that await travelers to Alberta: Black sand beaches, toxic lakes and clearcut forests. Until now, this kind of vacation destination was merely the stuff of science fiction; but now, it can be experienced first-hand." Watch the video!

POPSOpen Season on Canadian Water "What Canadians need to know is that this year, from March 2008 to March of 2009, eight lakes are going to be subject to being put on Schedule Two, which is just about every mine that is going ahead this year is looking around, looking for the nearest lake to dump its waste into.” Un. Frickin. Believable! Time for this government to fall! C'mon, Dion, DO SOMETHING!

POPSCanadian grocers not pulling tomatoes "Some Canadian producers, meanwhile, say they are seeing an increase in demand from U.S. buyers as U.S. health officials work to trace the source of the multi-state salmonella food poisoning outbreak. “We've been getting lots of calls from U.S. buyers looking to purchase our tomatoes,” said Maureen Sheehan, the marketing director for B.C. Hot House Foods Inc. “They know our product is safe.” Canadian retailers are also buying Canadian as they continue to stock tomatoes for their customers."

POPSToo Bad Canadians Can't Vote in the U.S. It seems that if Canadians had the opportunity to vote in the United States, there would be no need for the Republicans to waste their money on running a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The Democrats would have a landslide victory no matter which Democrat wins the nomination. As an American living in Canada, I vote in every election via absentee ballot. Maybe I could send for a whole slew of them. Nah! That's too much like what a Republican would try to get away with. :-)

POPSKangaroo Abuser Cites Man's 'Dominion' A reward has been offered if anyone knows anything about Tyson's whereabouts. As for the laws, the defense and the cruelty itself? Where to begin? Zoos in Canada only have regulations for native animals such as bears or coyotes. Keepers have no rules for exotic animals, including lions, tigers or kangaroos. "McElroy was brought to court for her manner with native animals and unfortunately it has nothing to do with Tyson's well-being," she said.

POPSAn Embarrassed Canadian/American
As an American living in Canada, I am embarrassed by both of my countries for working in such an obstructionist fashion to sabotage the climate change conferences they attend. While it is true the former Liberal government made a lot of promises it did not keep, nor was it able to meet its Kyoto commitments, at least they recognized the problem. Finally, when Stephane Dion was made the minister of the environment, he started to do some marvelous work, but the government fell soon thereafter, not really giving him the time to make a difference and to get his plans in place. All that time, the Conservatives in opposition voted down every environmental bill, and referred to the Kyoto protocol as a "Socialist plot." Of course, now that the Canadian public has caught on to this issue, they are pretending to care while the constantly point to the Liberal's inaction rather than actually taking action to work with other countries to get plans moving. What a shame and a fraud.

POPSNetbanging: Online Intimidation Another sinister use of the Social Web. From the article: "In Canada, "we've not quite devolved to the extent that we're seeing in the U.S., but we're not far behind. The Web is what it is. We're just a click behind," he says."

POPSCanadian child-sex offender to be released on bail?!! Bail for this convicted child-sex offender who is wanted on similar charges now in Thailand??? WTF  If the Canadian jurisprudence system doesn't want to keep this criminal locked up they should send him to Thailand to face the charges against him there. I doubt that the Thai court would release him on bail. Sheesh.

POPS Why military might does not always win: Star "You can use brute force to kill terrorists or insurgents, but at some time you need acquiescence and compliance from the population, or every time you kill an insurgent or terrorist, he will be replaced." The study's war model claims to be accurate in 80 per cent of the conflicts. Ominously, and despite some gains in Anbar province, the current U.S. mission in Iraq has a probability of success of just 20 per cent. (Vietnam, by comparison, had a 22 per cent chance of success.) There are obvious similarities between Iraq and Afghanistan – an enduring insurgency, an unstable "democratic" government.

POPSSome Canadian Schools Wanna Sell Soap Does your child wanna go to MacDonald's Fun Meal High? Or perhaps Walmart's Smart Price Middle School? What kind of thinking is taking place in Ottawa these days? Public educational institutions should not be turned into gigantic commercial billboards for the sake of raising funds. Come on folks in Ottawa-Carleton, come up with something more sensible and realistic. Creativity is one thing, but this kind of thinking is just plain crass.
