Why I use Clipmarks
Clipmarks helps me find and share news, resources and issues that are important to me, in a friendly format that provides ample opportunities to interact with other clippers. The passing parade of diverse subject matter clipped, popped and commented on by an ever-expanding community of weird and wonderful people from all over the world is a study in human nature that never fails to fascinate me.

Other social bookmarking services may provide a few of the features of Clipmarks, but they lack the visual appeal, the dynamics and the esprit de corp that set Clipmarks apart.

Too Bad Canadians Can't Vote in the U.S.
zasel
by zasel  1-8-2008
It seems that if Canadians had the opportunity to vote in the United States, there would be no need for the Republicans to waste their money on running a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The Democrats would have a landslide victory no matter which Democrat wins the nomination. As an American living in Canada, I vote in every election via absentee ballot. Maybe I could send for a whole slew of them. Nah! That's too much like what a Republican would try to get away with. :-)

The increasing of greenhouse gases over the arctic is the surest way of setting off the methane bomb, an intense warming cycle ignited by the methane emitted rotting melted tundra. We are talking extreme folly here.

Ontario to reduce plastic bag use by half

Although not as extreme as San Francisco and the Manitoba town of Leaf Rapids , both of which have banned plastic shopping bags, the province of Ontario is taking steps to reduce the number of plastic bags used by 50% to help the environment.

So, I'm reading this article, laughing, and thinking to myself, "As many Cynthia McKinneys as we've had in the US Congress over the years, at least none have ever been this looney." Then, of course, the article continues: "A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress." IQ tests to qualify for voting may not be as bad of an idea as I had previously thought.

I Live In Quebec and Always Feel Welcome
zasel
by zasel  3-6-2007
As a gay man living in Quebec I as astounded by the comments uttered by this radio commentator. Quebec is one of the most open and welcoming places in the world. Montreal, is a wide-open city, that attracts gay people and their friends from near and far for its annual Diversity/Gay festival. We held the first ever Gay Games this past summer. Gay people walk the street holding each others hands without causing any commotion whatsoever. If Mr. Boisclair loses the coming election on March 26th, it will not be because of his sexuality.

Not really Canadian?
coconutshell
by coconutshell  1-24-2007    1
Liberal MP Andrew Telegdi, vice-chair of the citizenship and immigration committee, called for Parliament to pass a new law for the Canadians who should never have lost their citizenship in the first place. "I mean, it just defies logic," Telegdi told CBC News. "The system doesn't make any sense, so it's critical that we have a citizenship act that is in compliance with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the generosity of what Canadians believe." What the frick?!!?! Another 8 months until they get "reinstated"? Does that mean they've got to take the test again and stuff?

Sixty years ago, it was verboten to ask if the mass influx of German people and culture into Poland, France, Russia, etc., was really such a great thing. Today, it's verboten to ask likewise about the mass influx of Third Worlders and their cultures into (for now) First World countries.

Maher Arar: "We knew he was going to be tortured"
enbar
by enbar  1-19-2007    5
A partial transcript of Sen. Patrick Leahy's questioning of AG Gonzales regarding the DOJ's handling of the Maher Arar case. For those of you who don't know, Arar was a Canadian citizen with no ties to terrorism who was seized while changing planes in New York City, shipped (via "extraordinary rendition") to Syria, tortured for almost a year, and then returned to Canada without explanation. He has never been accused of any wrongdoing. Remarkably enough, this story has received (as far as I can tell) pretty much zero coverage in the mainstream US press, though it has been covered quite widely in Canada. I couldn't find a single story in the US media on this particular Senate hearing.

Mid-term marks at Harper High
gingembre
by gingembre  12-27-2006
A witty review of the Harper government Cabinet's performance as graded by the NDP (New Democratic Party). I agree with all the grades except for that of Loyola Hearn, who I feel deserves an F- for his obstinate refusal to take an ethical and sustainable stand regarding our fisheries and oceans. IMO he and Rona deserve to be expelled from Harper High.
