About me
Just monkeying my way through life...

Why I use Clipmarks
Clipmarks helps me find and share news, resources and issues that are important to me, in a friendly format that provides ample opportunities to interact with other clippers. The passing parade of diverse subject matter clipped, popped and commented on by an ever-expanding community of weird and wonderful people from all over the world is a study in human nature that never fails to fascinate me.

Other social bookmarking services may provide a few of the features of Clipmarks, but they lack the visual appeal, the dynamics and the esprit de corp that set Clipmarks apart.

Mexicans Protest Canadian Mining Company
gingembre
by gingembre  7-1-2008    1
"Not only does the mine require an estimated 32 million litres of water per day, there are serious concerns that the cyanide will contaminate the aquifers, says hydrologist Mario Martínez. "There are cyanide heap leach pads (large pools) right on top of an aquifer." "Once the ore is removed from the Cerro de San Pedro pit, it is trucked two km to specially prepared outdoor pads, where a solution of water and cyanide is sprayed on the ore to dissolve the gold and silver out of the rock. The water is treated to remove the precious metals and recover some of the cyanide. "spent ore" is removed and piled into hills already more than 20 metres high "Sixteen tonnes of sodium cyanide are being used daily, and there is a great risk it could seep into the aquifer" The mining company assures that the cyanide is managed in a closed circuit and that the surface of the leaching pools are covered by special plastic membranes, injected with air and monitored by leak detectors.

Open Season on Canadian Water

"What Canadians need to know is that this year, from March 2008 to March of 2009, eight lakes are going to be subject to being put on Schedule Two, which is just about every mine that is going ahead this year is looking around, looking for the nearest lake to dump its waste into.” Un. Frickin. Believable! Time for this government to fall! C'mon, Dion, DO SOMETHING!

Conrad Black convicted of fraud and obstruction of justice

The disgraced Lord Black is, as {{Socratoad}} has so aptly stated, one "nasty bastard". He's lucky that he wasn't convicted on all counts, but white collar crime apparently is still easier to get away with than other types of crime.

Warm weather gasoline: less bang for your buck?
gingembre
by gingembre  6-20-2007    2
Does paying for fumes have you fuming? "Almost a century ago, the industry and regulators agreed to define a gallon of gasoline as 231 cubic inches (3,785 cubic centimeters) at 60 degrees F (15.5 degrees C). But as the mercury rises and gasoline expands, it takes more than a gallon of gas to produce the same amount of energy as a regular gallon in colder weather.U.S. gas retailers ignore the temperature swings and always dispense fuel as if it is 60 degrees F (15.5 C). As a result, gas is an average of about 5 degrees F warmer than the federal standard"

Does Tesco have the US "in the bag" for healthy food?
gingembre
by gingembre  6-14-2007    1
Tesco is bringing Fresh & Easy healthy foods to the US, counting on a demand for healthy, organic food. Not for those who buy their groceries from Wal-Mart to save money, oblivious or apathetic about the health and ethical costs of "cheap" foods. When I visit California I like to shop at Trader Joe's. Next time I'm in Los Angeles I hope to find a Fresh & Easy store, too.

Companies working to pare down waste: greener packaging
gingembre
by gingembre  5-27-2007    2
Good news from Berry Plastics in Evansville, Indiana, and Wal-Mart. Berry Plastics says that redesigning packaging to reduce bulk is becoming such a trend that they have hired an engineer devoted to repackaging projects. And Wal-Mart plans to use info from their "packaging scorecard" to make decisions on purchasing merchandise, with the goal of creating "zero waste" by recycling, reusing or otherwise breaking down product waste. So the greening of Wal-Mart may provide the financial incentive for companies to reduce their packaging, as they compete with one another for either Wal-Mart's goodwill or for consumer acclaim in their own right. This is just what the environmental movement needs--a push from the consumer product companies and vendors to save money and help the environment at the same time, with plenty of media fanfare to promote their efforts and boost their images. Their bottom line matters most, of course, but now it is tied to benefiting the environment.

Why individual efforts are only part of the solution
gingembre
by gingembre  5-27-2007    1
It is discouraging, isn't it?! We all need to do our part, but we need more than individual efforts to protect our environment. Otherwise it's like bailing water out of a rapidly sinking rowboat with a teaspoon. Every little bit helps, but the overall prognosis is bleak.

Coca, cocaine & Coca-Cola collide in Columbia
gingembre
by gingembre  5-12-2007    1
Coca Sek, a soft drink made and sold by Colombia’s Nasa Indians, apparently is a Coca-Cola knock-off gaining popularity. Now Colombia is being pushed by the International Narcotics Control Board to comply with a 1961 treaty requiring “uprooting all coca bushes which grow wild” and to stop distribution of products with any trace of coca, the main ingredient in cocaine. Coca-Cola, the Narcotics Control Board, and Colombia’s food-safety agency deny Nasa accusations that Coca-Cola is behind the ban. The Nasa say that Coca-Cola is made with coca leaves-ban it, too. The 1961 treaty allows coca leaves to be sold internationally, under the condition that all the cocaine alkaloid is removed, so a US firm legally imports coca leaves from Peru to sell to clients. “Many Indians in the Andes - where coca is revered as a sacred plant and a matter of national pride in several countries - are angry that the United States is importing coca leaves legally while their own coca products are banned.”
