About me
Just monkeying my way through life...

Why I use Clipmarks
Clipmarks helps me find and share news, resources and issues that are important to me, in a friendly format that provides ample opportunities to interact with other clippers. The passing parade of diverse subject matter clipped, popped and commented on by an ever-expanding community of weird and wonderful people from all over the world is a study in human nature that never fails to fascinate me.

Other social bookmarking services may provide a few of the features of Clipmarks, but they lack the visual appeal, the dynamics and the esprit de corp that set Clipmarks apart.

New Brunswick Veterinarians To Stop Cropping & Docking
gingembre
by gingembre  10-5-2008
Good news for dogs! Too bad the breeders are so heartless and self-centered. vet: "People say it doesn't really hurt them, but they scream when you do it" Hopefully it will be illegal for anyone to crop or dock to discourage breeders from mutilating dogs, causing unnecessary pain and risking infection.

Jane Goodall: We Need A New Mindset
gingembre
by gingembre  6-6-2008    4
"We should admit that the infliction of suffering on beings who are capable of feeling is ethically problematic and that the amazing human brain should set to work to find new ways of testing and experimenting that will not involve the use of live, sentient beings." "Her call comes as the European Commission prepares to publish draft legislation to update the EU’s animal experiments directive (Directive 86/609 EEC). The existing law is out of date (over 20 years old), with hundreds of thousands of animals currently receiving no protection at all." "Dr Goodall was joined by biomedical researchers, MEPs and animal protectionists at a Replace Animal Experiments in Europe event in Brussels. Event organisers, the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research and the Humane Society International (HSI), are spearheading a campaign to accelerate European efforts to replace animal experiments with more ethical and reliable methods."

“As a kid I remember these baby killers bragging how they would slice open the beating heart of the first baby seal they kill each spring,” said Captain Watson. “They drank the hot blood and smeared it cross upon their foreheads and dabbed blood on their cheeks. They called it the “Rites of Spring.” I called them barbarians then, and I call them barbarians still, and as a Canadian and a Maritimer, I have been ashamed of this bloody evil tradition all my life and I’ve dedicated my life to shutting this monstrous obscenity down forever, and I believe that soon we will see that day when the killing is ended.”

"A farmer who sells animal sex said he is extremely surprised that foreigners are ready to travel so far for it. Norwegian veterinarians know of at least 124 cases of animal sex abuse in Norway. " --I always wondered how long it would take before the relationship of Gene Wilder and THAT sheep affect curious men! (from everything u wanted to know about sex -woody allen --(incredible how dirty this 1972 movie really was--bestiality, exposure, perversion, and S&M get their moments in the sun-- There was supposedly another vignette in this film, "What Makes a Man Homosexual?", with Woody & Louise Lasser as spiders (Louise as a black widow), and Louise eats him after they have sex.)

he agencies are also prepared to heavily haze, capture and slaughter buffalo this year based on Yellowstone's estimate of 4,700 individual buffalos. Though Yellowstone biologists have stated time and again that the Park could sustain well over 5,000 buffalo, the Interagency Bison Management Plan's politically derived population cap for wild buffalo living in Yellowstone is 3,000. Based on this, the agencies could capture and kill upwards of 1,700 buffalo.

The Way We Live NOW....
k9riley99
by k9riley99  12-21-2007    1
The first story is about MRSA, the very scary antibiotic-resistant strain of Staphylococcus bacteria that is now killing more Americans each year than AIDS — 100,000 infections leading to 19,000 deaths in 2005, according to estimates in The Journal of the American Medical Association. For years now, drug-resistant staph infections have been a problem in hospitals, where the heavy use of antibiotics can create resistant strains of bacteria. No one is yet sure how or where this strain evolved, but it is sufficiently different from the hospital-bred strains to have some researchers looking elsewhere for its origin, to another environment where the heavy use of antibiotics is selecting for the evolution of a lethal new microbe: the concentrated animal feeding operation, or CAFO. The words "natural," or "green," does not mean nice or clean anymore.

Kangaroo Abuser Cites Man's 'Dominion'

A reward has been offered if anyone knows anything about Tyson's whereabouts. As for the laws, the defense and the cruelty itself? Where to begin? Zoos in Canada only have regulations for native animals such as bears or coyotes. Keepers have no rules for exotic animals, including lions, tigers or kangaroos. "McElroy was brought to court for her manner with native animals and unfortunately it has nothing to do with Tyson's well-being," she said.

Animals can't speak for themselves

"It would be a mistake to idealise traditional animal husbandry as the standard by which the animal-products industry falls short: traditional animal husbandry is brutal enough, just on a smaller scale. A better standard by which to judge both practices would be the simple standard of humanity: is this truly the best that human beings are capable of?"

Why Adopt An Older Dog?
gingembre
by gingembre  11-30-2007    11
by Ardeth DeVries. More: "Older dogs have figured out what humans are all about and are willing and eager to add new information to their knowledge of human behavior. Old dogs can absolutely learn new tricks! There’s absolutely nothing like the smile you get from older dogs—especially dogs that haven’t felt like smiling in awhile, but now have reasons to smile because you love them. Older dogs are looking for human companions who will value their wisdom and their slow pace. They have their very own special appeal. When you adopt older dogs, you can erase any unpleasant past experiences that they’ve had by loving them and caring for them. It doesn’t get any better than that!" On a personal note, last April our local animal shelter helped us find an older dog to provide a companion to our 15-yr-old dog, who, like us, was grieving over the death of his older "brother" . We adopted our Sadie, a 9-yr-old who had been discarded in favor of a puppy. She is a JOY! :)

Pennsylvania Court Finds Animal Abuse Is Legal
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  6-30-2007    1
You tell me, if you don't think this constitutes animal abuse?!? I'm shocked and horrified at the "not-guilty" verdict. It's simply horrendous! A sickening verdict. Grrrr..... # birds overcrowded in wire cages so small, they cannot spread their wings, # hens left to suffer from untreated illnesses or injuries, # birds with their wings, legs, or feet entangled in the wires of cages, unable to access food or water, # injured or dying birds removed from their cages and left in the aisles without access to food or water, # birds impaled on the wires of the cages with many found already dead as a result of the painful immobilization, and # hens living in cages amongst decomposing bodies of other birds. “If these animals had been dogs or cats, there’s little doubt this case would have resulted in a conviction. There is a clear double standard here, and that hypocrisy is troubling.”
