POPSSolar Will Beat Oil This article gives me some hope. A bit more: "Enough total solar energy shines on the earth during a 40-minute period of time to power the entire world economy for a year. We only need to harness a tiny portion of this sunshine to make a huge difference in the world: environmentally, politically and economically."

POPSSalt: The Key to Successful Solar Power SolarReserve will be able to produce electricity at night or in inclement weather. This product is more predictable than water reserves, the supply is free and inexhaustible, and the environmental impact is essentially zero.

POPSDisaster Gives Birth to Greenest Town in America To leverage environmentalism to rebuild and sustain itself in the wake of near total destruction, it just may unwittingly be writing a modern survival guide for rural America. Currently, the town has completed town houses for working class families that are LEED gold certified. Gold certification means these places will be almost twice as efficient as they used to be. A lot of what's happening in Greensburg is some of the first in the country.

POPSHow Electric Cars Could Save the Grid Benefits of the "Vehicle to Grid" project being developed by researchers at the University of Delaware "electric vehicles could do more than provide backup energy. If just a quarter of the nation's cars were electric -- about 50 million cars -- the power capacity of those batteries would be equal to 700 gigawatts, the entire power production capacity in the United States today" "For the system to have the most value, electric cars need to be equipped with a high, 80-amp/240-volt plug -- something a little more powerful than the plug on an electric dryer. (An electrician can install the corresponding outlet into any home.) But most of the existing electric hybrid cars come equipped with a low, 15-amp, 110-volt plug." "the low-amp plugs work...but if the electric car owner is selling electricity back to the grid, they want to sell as much as possible. A 15-amp plug could net a car owner about $400 year, whereas an 80-amp plug could net $4,000"

POPSNoon Solar Power Bags This will help combat global warming. If you carry a laptop, ipod, and many other types of electronic gadgets this is the bag for you. I actually saw the bag advertised on tbs.com. If you are at the airport and need to use your laptop, just plug into your bag. The one I saw was outfitted with all types of adapters for the various techno gadgets.

POPSTrue Daylight Savings I've been telling everyone I have a jar on my sill because its Daylight Savings Time. Then I come across this!

POPSRecycled tires as firewood splitting aids I like the use of the upturned bucket as a tool table to avoid bending (see photo). The bucket can then hold the tools for easy transport when the job is done. As if the job of wood-splitting is ever done! Note the need to eliminate mosquito breeding habitats by puncturing the tires in several places to allow water to drain out.

POPSEthanol isn't such a green fuel after all At least not the way we make it here in the U.S., from corn. I know some countries in South America make it from sugar cane and that may be more efficient, but making it from corn isn't green.

POPSHOW TO - Build your own wind turbine Kagetsuki sent in this how-to on building a model vertical wind generator using household items, wire and magnets - " These plans are for the construction of a machine called a Savonius wind turbine. Wind turbines come in two general types, those whose main turning shaft is horizontal and points into the wind, and those with a vertical shaft that points up. The Savonius is an example of the vertical axis type. It consists of two simple scoops that catch the wind and cause the shaft to turn."

POPSSolar breakthrough: now households can power the grid Australia's future energy may be secured by a grid of good, old fashioned, trusty nuclear. Nuclear families, that is, and the roofs over their heads linked into a giant electranet, if the following breakthrough in photovoltaic cells holds true to its market promise.

POPSGood news for vegans, bad news for meat-eaters One great result of the rising cost of corn due to rising demand for ethanol is that the price of meat will reflect the cost of the feed. If higher prices result in less demand for chicken, beef and pig flesh, then perhaps the conversion of feed to fuel will be worth it. Don't forget that eggs will cost more, too, since hens need to eat grain. And, oh yes, don't forget dairy products--the rising cost of feed for cows will cost us more for those, too. Vegans won't feel the pinch nearly as much. :-)
