People generally like to share what they create, but in a culture that tells them to be protective of their ideas, people start to believe in the danger of sharing. Then Sharism will be degraded in their mind and not encouraged in their society. But if we can encourage someone to share, her sharing paths will stay open. Sharism will be kept in her mind as a memory and an instinct. If in the future she faces a creative choice, her choice will be, "Share."

POPSIs social media an illusion? What i get out of social media is access to information and ideas that i otherwise wouldn't find myself. Quite honestly, my social media attention is primarily allocated to Clipmarks and Amplify because these two sites provide the type of experience i'm looking for - the abilty to understand the world better by seeing it through other people's eyes. I genuinely believe i am a smarter, more well rounded person because i've had the opportunity to see what other people are reading and what they have to say about it.

POPSWhat social media means to me... This is an excerpt from a piece I just wrote (it continues at the source). I was inspired to write it after looking at a series of photos labeled "The Decade in Pictures" that made me feel very sad about this past decade. After looking at them my only thought was that hopefully we are all so fed up with the way things have been that we can rally together to bring about a better decade ahead. The potential impact of social media gives me great hope! Oh, and i didn't realize that written posts didn't make their way into the Amplify Newsfeed of Public Timeline...i ought to rethink that :)

POPSHumans filtering for humans - now why didn't i think of that? Ok, i'd by lying if i didn't acknowledge a little bit of frustration these days. With everyone jumping on the concept of human filtered search, i can't help but feel a little bit of "wtf do you think clipmarks.com has been doing for years?". That said, i suppose the time has come when the market is listening to this kind of talk so we better make sure we're in the conversation.

POPSIs the Internet melting our brains? I start with Plato's critique of writing where he says that if we depend on writing, we will lose the ability to remember things. Our memory will become weak. And he also criticizes writing because the written text is not interactive in the way spoken communication is. He also says that written words are essentially shadows of the things they represent. They're not the thing itself. Of course we remember all this because Plato wrote it down -- the ultimate irony. We hear a thousand objections of this sort throughout history: Thoreau objecting to the telegraph, because even though it speeds things up, people won't have anything to say to one another. Then we have Samuel Morse, who invents the telegraph, objecting to the telephone because nothing important is ever going to be done over the telephone because there's no way to preserve or record a phone conversation.
