POPSRACISM, A SHORT STORY
Shocked! My son and his best friend were helping with the move, setting up my son's bed, making it up with clean sheets,etc., when my mother happened to walk by and began a very disconcerted yet fast growing alarm that my son's friend (early teenagers) was about to place my her bedspread on the bed. (frankly I don't know what to apply to this group of planetary dwellers, for fear I'll say the wrong thing!). It was obvious to me and I knew it must be obvious to him (my son was just confused) that he was going to somehow contaminate the spread! I was sick to my Soul. Wondering how I ever came through this family of racists, I shushed her away; but I FELT his embarassment, his wish to be anywhere else, his emotional and psyhic pain. Desperately I wanted to take the blow for him but of course I could not...never have figured out how to do that. We finished the day out but that memory hangs about my lifescapes, with piercing anger at my mother's behavior & my inability to protect.
