POPSWe have a 'right to starlight,' astronomers say One Brazilian astronomer, Augusto Daminelli, told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that in Rio, "it should be possible to see up to 5,000 stars with the naked eye -- but because of light pollution we can only see 150." He noted that nearly a third of electric lighting is directed to the heavens, and thus wasted. Possible solutions include putting aluminum covers on street lighting to direct the illumination downwards, and using weaker, more energy-efficient lamps, he said. "More than two billion people in the world are unable to see the Milky Way. For us, the sky is a heritage site for mankind," he said. <<

POPSReverse Graffiti The Brazilian artist’s work came to a happier resolution. The authorities were certainly miffed but could find nothing to charge him with. They had no other recourse but to clean the tunnel — but only the parts Alexandre had already cleaned. The artist merely continued his campaign on the other side of traffic. The utterly flummoxed city officials then decided to take drastic action. Not only did they clean the entire tunnel but also every other tunnel in Sao Paulo. Bravo!

POPSBirds on The Wires - wonderful idea :-) "Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating."

POPSTwo constants to rule us all The minimum number of dimensional fundamental constants has been debated for over a century. In 1899, Max Planck argued that four constants were needed to describe all phenomena. He didn’t know what they were, but labelled them a, b, c and f.

POPSSao Paolo - City Without Ads !!? "But advertising and business groups regard the legislation as injurious to society and an affront to their professions. They say that free expression will be inhibited, jobs will be lost and consumers will have less information on which to base purchasing decisions. They also argue that streets will be less safe at night with the loss of lighting from outdoor advertising."

POPSEthanol Diplomacy may Change the Course of History These meetings will hopefully lead to further strengthen alliances in the Americas, reduce the western hemispheres dependency on fossil fuels from the middle east, and have a positive impact on the environment. It sounds like a WIN, WIN, WIN!!!

POPSTrain drove over 2 Dead Drunk Men. "When the driver stopped, he saw two heads underneath the train." Well two heads are better than one or non. Note the sentence despite "the court hearing that one had 33 previous convictions while the other had 63 previous convictions." 5,000 plus Brazilian fans, most of them resident in Ireland, cheered Brazil to victory in the 80,000 capacity Croke Park.

POPS CARNIVAL It is Carnival Season in many countries around the world with a Roman Catholic heritage. Celebrations and parades put on just prior to the observance of Lent. Tomorrow will be the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but the past couple of weeks have seen parades and celebrations throughout Europe, the Caribbean and South America - notably Venice, Italy and Brazil. Collected here are just a glimpse of some of the elaborate celebrations of this Carnival season. (40 photos total) I strenuously recommend viewing photos on the website. They are spectacular and stunning.
