POPSHey Al, turn down the AC, Sheesh! Hypocrites, all of them. How does the guy who wins a Nobel Peace prize for predicting our demise due to global warming actually increase his energy consumption and thus his carbon footprint while telling the little people to reduce theirs? The better question is now do the environ"mentalists" not hold him accountable and why does the liberal media ignore it?

POPSLiberalism: Can it survive? Just another clip about bitter liberals. This was written by John Leo in the U.S. News & World Report, March 7th 2005. I clipped a great paragraph that I think sums up so many of the liberals I've encountered(perhaps not all, but many). The entire article is worth a read.

POPSFive Things About SAP's Strategy That You Need to Know It is interesting how SAP generally stays below the IT news radar. Their recent legal issues with Oracle not-withstanding, not much newsworthy really ever comes out about SAP. This is a great read for just that reason as it sums up some important things about SAP's strategy.

POPSNinety Percent of Virtual Worlds Projects Fail I did an MBA video project on virtual worlds (See my first clip). My assessment a year ago on this was that companies hadn't figured out how to make those worlds useful to the consumer. Instead they rushed head first into staking their virtual claim in the 3D world only to find out nobody cared or noticed except the typical hype mongers of the IT press that can't wait to be first to predict the next "BIG" thing. Maybe they were a little quick to judge.

POPSWhy EMC Showed VMware's Greene the Door, Hired Microsoft-Savvy Scrapper Kevin Fogarty makes some great points about where EMC needs to go in their virtualization play. Rather than waiting for Microsoft to beat you at their game, change the game. I agree that the cloud is where EMC needs to focus now that Microsoft is trying to make the VMware product irrelevant by basically giving their version of it away for free. Microsoft will never be good at innovation. However, with their installed base, they are a very strong me too player with deep pockets.

POPSMicrosoft tries again to streamline volume pricing There's got to be a better way. Something that doesn't lock the organization in to pointless interim updates of all products but rather requires Microsoft to prove the value of upgrades like every other software vendor has to. Selling by default has been their process for so many years that they've forgotten how to sell. Locking the corporation into a cyclical license perpetuates that behavior.

POPSOLAP's cube is crumbling around the edges The traditional BI project starts with identifying the questions the business needs answered. From there, the data is identified the star schema is created and the queries are written and optimized. Then, the business finds more questions... This is a good article on what options are out there to allow IT to be ready.

POPSStrategies for Dealing With IT Complexity Often times, IT looks for the solution to a cingular problem without considering how it fits into the whole picture. The result of doing this can be crippling as time goes on. Every one-off solution requires someone to administer it and probably requires some type of integration. Over time, you end up weaving yourself into a complex web of mini solutions that make it virtually impossible to respond to the business needs.

POPSITIL Adoption Change is something IT struggles with daily. We're change agents and yet when the change is directed at us, we're just as resistant as our customers. This is a great article on the challenges faced by David Farris, IT Manager at the US Department of Agriculture.

POPSWhat Do Business Analysts Do for Software Implementation Projects The definition of a business analyst is probably one of the least understood roles in business today. From functional support to acting as lead in a project and everything in-between, I've seen them fill the role. However, they're all not created equal and many have the title but don't measure up. This article gives a good overview of what their role should be. If your business analysts aren't doing these things they're probably not business analysts.
