    Outstanding interview with Steve Jobs
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  3-6-2008    2
Fortune's got an incredible interview with Apple's Steve Jobs in this month's issue. Each page had something clipworthy, so I've just grabbed from the first. The source is well worth reading through.

    Apple shuts down Think Secret?!
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  12-20-2007    1
Wow - I'm a pretty big Apple fan, and I agree that some of the news that has been leaked has been a little overboard lately, but this seems crazy. ThinkSecret was a source where people salivated over even flimsy details promising new shiny gadgets to buy from Apple, and probably did more for them than any "I'm a mac" spot ever could. Now Apple themselves have sued them out of existence. Boneheads.

3rd Party Apps Coming to the iPhone!
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  10-17-2007
Whoo! This is my #1 complaint with my iPhone. I'm running a hacked version of the 1.0.2 firmware just so I can run apps. The big question is whether apple will let the 'little guys' play or if this will be locked up via a digital signature, but they've got a pretty good history of being developer friendly. My recommendation would be to have 2 SDK's, one for developing mobile "widgets" that are fairly restricted (think flash apps, etc) and another class of apps that have to go through an approval process, but get more access to things like your contact list, etc.

    Patent law may be changing!
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  9-8-2007    4
I've long believed the US patent system to be broken, allowing "patent portfolio" companies to file for the simplest and most inane things and then sit on them while others actually innovate in a space. That said, I don't know if I'm behind the switch from first-to-invent to first-to-file. Could that cause an even bigger problem of people rushing to patent every little thing before someone else steals it out from under them? Lets hope the section on improving patent quality includes stricter checks for prior art and limits frivolous claims.

    iWant One
    Julia Bradley
    by Julia Bradley  6-27-2007
As an extremely happy user of one of the very first 128k Macs back in the day, I doubt the price of the new iPhone will be a limiting factor in its sales. I willingly spent my entire summer's earnings to buy my own fab 128k Mac for my college years...and it was worth every hard-earned dollar I spent. Considering that this generation of teens and twenty-somethings tends to have access to more cash than any prior youth generation, I predict the iPhone's price tag will barely be a hurdle in acquiring it, and a justifiable sacrifice for those who must earn their way to buy one.

Battery updater for Macbook Pro released
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  4-30-2007
I've been having a little bit of trouble with my Macbook's battery. It usually runs a long time after a charge, but the "battery health" percentage has been going down since the day I bought it. It's at 88% now, but hit a worrying 74% yesterday. Hopefully this update will help me get a little more juice out of my mac and reflect the battery's remaining time and health more accurately.

Disk burning in Mac OSX sucks - Open Source to the Rescue

The included "burn folder" for Mac OS X is woefully inadequate. It doesn't event tell you how much space is available on the disc until you go to burn!

    by ericskiff  4-12-2007
Interesting. I'm glad that they're being forthright about the delays and why they happened. I wouldn't be surprised if they were rushing a bit to counter the "Vista buzz" and when it came out said "oh, good, we can relax a bit."

    Jobs speaks out against DRM
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  2-9-2007    1
There's a million things I hate about DRM, but the main one is that it's often used to restrict behavior that its not illegal, but is simply not in the record companies favor. Give me a reasonably priced, DRM-free .mp3 download service, and I'll never buy a CD again.

Where are Home and End on Mac?
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  1-15-2007
I've just switched to a Macbook Pro, and the lack of proper home and end keys was driving me batty. Turns out that hitting CMD+Right or CMD+Left to the trick, and there's lots more handy shortcuts.

The image is a little too big, but it was too funny not to clip. I'll be watching the keynote very closely, as I'm buying a new macbook, and I've been waiting to make sure there weren't any surprise announcements (like, say, a quad core macbook pro).

Funny Zune vs Ipod spoof from Microsoft
    ericskiff
    by ericskiff  12-14-2006
I can't really agree with the video, since sharing music Zune to Zune is a temporary thing, even if you own all the copyrights, but it's an interesting "we can be snarky too" dig from Microsoft .
