I love this quotation. It's spoken in the middle of a live gospel performance by Sweet Honey in the Rock, performed in a church in 1980.

You probably thought this was a clip about politics, didn't you? Well, no. Scientists have found evidence that the capital area had a rich and diverse dinosaur (and prehistoric mammal) population during the Cretaceous.

    Musharraf's speech defending martial law
    enbar
    by enbar  11-4-2007
You probably know that Musharraf declared martial law on Nov. 2 against the strongly expressed wishes of U.S. and other Western diplomats. The irony is that he claims (quite plausibly, in my view, but I don't know that much about it) to be doing it in order to prevent Pakistan being overrun by violent Islamist agitators, which would be a disaster of unfathomable proportions for the GWOT and U.S. policy generally (not to mention India and Afghanistan). I'm mystified about what the U.S. really wants Musharraf to do.

Did a misguided attempt to administer an enema to a constipated elephant really result in the suffocation death of an overzealous zookeeper? If you're wondering why I clipped this, see here .

Sikh names "not qualified" for immigration to Canada
    enbar
    by enbar  7-23-2007
Canada requires that individuals change their names who seek to immigrate and who bear the traditional Sikh baptismal names of Singh (for men) or Kaur (for women). Odd. Not really news; the policy is ten years old.

US media distort religion by painting it as uniformly conservative
    enbar
    by enbar  6-11-2007    1
I have yet to read the full report, but their statistics-based content analysis would seem to bear out my general impressions. U.S. news media tend to treat religion as a conservative force, but this means leaving out the voices of maybe two-thirds of religious believers.

A struggle for the heart of Islam? Sunni vs. Shiite tension heats up
    enbar
    by enbar  2-8-2007    4
Fareed Zakaria remarks that al-Qaeda began as a pan-Islamic organization and has increasingly turned into an anti-Shiite one. He compares this internal conflict to the extraordinarily bloody struggles that decimated Europe following the Protestant Reformation. I'm a little skeptical ... but it's an interesting comparison.

Actually, Telesur, being state-owned, is nothing like al-Jazeera, which is one of the only non-state-owned broadcasters in its market... but they are frequently perceived to share a broadly anti-U.S. orientation. Prediction: expect the rift between American and non-American perceptions of events to widen.
