POPSThe Olympic theme music is Leo Arnaud's "Bugler's Dream" For some reason this question has been bugging me -- what's the origin of that little brass fanfare that we all (in the U.S.) recognize as the theme music to the Olympics? Turns out it was written in 1958 by composer Leo Arnaud as part of a film score.

POPSLene Alexandra's boobs: they're O.K.!!!! O.K.! So, she's hot. But besides that, she has a sense of humor, and this is hilarious. Alexandra describes this single as "a very deep and reflecting song about my favourite bodypart. Haha." Try to pay attention to the lyrics, they're funny.

POPSMusic video: "Galang," by M.I.A. (a/k/a Maya Arulpragasam) London-born Sri Lankan painter, film and recording artist Maya Arulpragasam (nom de guerre M.I.A.) was Spin magazine's Artist of the Year in 2005. This single came out in 2003. Her music is controversial; her father was connected with the Tamil Tigers and she's expressed sympathy for the PLO. See http://answers.com/M.I.A.

POPSFree early music recordings on classical guitar (lots) Jon Sayles, an amateur classical guitarist and lover of early music, has recorded a huge number of classic early melodies on his guitar and made all the recordings freely available in mp3 format on his site. Check it out. He is modest about his abilities, but his renditions are certainly competent and, I think, very sensitive and well done.

POPSFifty songs for kids that aren't utter crap A handy list. I've always felt that most music marketed at children -- or, rather, marketed at parents as "stuff your children will like" -- insults the intelligence and taste of children and adults.

POPSMedieval & Renaissance music - listen online Lots of music here; good selection. Unfortunately it's all RealMedia presentations. But the quality is decent. Update : The links in the clip won't work, unless you're at Columbia. However, if you go to the original page, many of the links further down on the page will work. I didn't notice when clipping that some of the .rm files are protected, but many others aren't.

POPSSeeqpod: music search engine Post Singingfish.com's demise, this may be useful. It appears to crawl podcasts and other mp3-containing sites. It has an in-page, embeddable Flash player, but it does not make it easy to download the files you find.

POPSHigh-quality, free, legal symphonic music MP3s of Peabody Symphony Orch. performances (in-house orchestra of the Peabody Institute, Johns Hopkins's conservatory). Some great stuff to listen to here. Beethoven, Dvorak, and Brahms are all well represented.
