UK accrediting body approves evangelical curriculum despite its dismissal of evolution
    enbar
    by enbar  8-3-2009    1
I'm actually clipping this not because I find the news particularly interesting or shocking, but because I find the wording of the excerpt from the biology textbook kind of interesting: "God created each type of fish, amphibian, and reptile as separate, unique animals. " This emphasis on separateness and uniqueness seems characteristic of creationist thinking.

"Islam is of the devil": a Gainsville, FL church attracts controversy
    enbar
    by enbar  7-9-2009    10
The photo and the pastor's comments pretty much speak for themselves. I probably wouldn't have clipped this except for the final paragraph in the clip -- "we are definitely trying to open up dialogue." This baffles me. I wonder what they're actually trying to accomplish -- presumably the primary purpose of the sign is illocutionary in nature. To the pastor, I would point out that "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial" (1 Cor. 6.12). Is this beneficial?

Baptist Press: Hispanics become "Christians" when they come to the U.S.
    enbar
    by enbar  7-8-2009    10
I assume the headline comes from Baptist Press and not from Barna, the polling organization, but still, the implicit claim that Hispanic Catholics are not Christians strikes me as breathtaking in its audacity. Via BibleBeltBlogger (bit.ly/1YxMX).

Some impressively paranoid quotations can be found in the article, suggesting (it seems to me) that the "parishioners" in this church expect that they will have to use their weapons against the government at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Reflections on James Dobson, child-rearing, and U.S. political discourse
    enbar
    by enbar  6-3-2008    16
For some time, Dr. Dobson has been known for his insistence that a key component of parents' responsibility is the inflicting of controlled violence on their children in order to make them obedient, virtuous, and "God-fearing." Here a blogger considers links between Dobson's typical language of war, as pertinent to child-rearing, marriage and homosexuality, and foreign policy.

    Jesus's Christmas letter
    enbar
    by enbar  1-10-2008
Found this on an evangelical website. At first, I have to admit, I thought it was a parody, but I don't think it is. Incidentally, the "X" in "X-mas" is a chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Christos. Early Christians used the Chi-Rho (which looks like an X and a P superimposed on one another, also known as "the monogram of Christ") as a symbol for Christ, and the so-called "Jesus fish" is based on the acronym iota-chi-theta-upsion-sigma (for "Iesous Christos Theou Huios Soter," or "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior").
