The Olympic theme music is Leo Arnaud's "Bugler's Dream"
    enbar
    by enbar  8-18-2008
For some reason this question has been bugging me -- what's the origin of that little brass fanfare that we all (in the U.S.) recognize as the theme music to the Olympics? Turns out it was written in 1958 by composer Leo Arnaud as part of a film score.

O.K.! So, she's hot. But besides that, she has a sense of humor, and this is hilarious. Alexandra describes this single as "a very deep and reflecting song about my favourite bodypart. Haha." Try to pay attention to the lyrics, they're funny.

London-born Sri Lankan painter, film and recording artist Maya Arulpragasam (nom de guerre M.I.A.) was Spin magazine's Artist of the Year in 2005. This single came out in 2003. Her music is controversial; her father was connected with the Tamil Tigers and she's expressed sympathy for the PLO. See http://answers.com/M.I.A.

Free early music recordings on classical guitar (lots)
    enbar
    by enbar  6-21-2007    1
Jon Sayles, an amateur classical guitarist and lover of early music, has recorded a huge number of classic early melodies on his guitar and made all the recordings freely available in mp3 format on his site. Check it out. He is modest about his abilities, but his renditions are certainly competent and, I think, very sensitive and well done.

Jeff Sharlet: "keeping it unreal" - the concept of "authentic" pop music
    enbar
    by enbar  5-16-2007
Interesting review by TheRevealer.org's Jeff Sharlet of a new book critiquing the concept of "authenticity" in popular music and culture. Most of what we think of as "authentic" (for example, Delta blues) has complex roots and has been carefully shaped for a market.

Lots of music here; good selection. Unfortunately it's all RealMedia presentations. But the quality is decent. Update : The links in the clip won't work, unless you're at Columbia. However, if you go to the original page, many of the links further down on the page will work. I didn't notice when clipping that some of the .rm files are protected, but many others aren't.
