Does the Full Moon Really Make People Crazy?

"So if you're feeling a little mischievous tonight, it might be the full moon. Or it might just be the fact that you read some sensationalistic articles about how the full moon affects people's behavior." ;-)

Intercultural Understanding
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-25-2008    12
We must always try to make life better and learn from our errors. In education we must show that we have learned and through education we must avoid the evils of intolerance, stereotypes and racism, which, alas, still exists and terrorize the existence of so many people around the world. “Education for Intercultural Understanding and Dialogue” 21. October 2008.

Laky’s text treatment really seems to declare once and for all that the best solutions might literally be right in our own backyards and communities, with materials and practices that simply need to be re-examined and better utilized. As the artist openly states, “Natural materials are very expressive…they also connect me to nature which is a deep love of mine.” According to her artist website, Laky considers herself to be an environmentalist, with her work often employing materials harvested from nature and/or agricultural sources with select recycled elements incorporated. “She is attracted to humble materials and simple, direct methods of hand construction…Laky has (also) been a strong advocate for the establishment of an environmental sustainability curriculum in design and art at UC Davis.”

"How have Al Gore and the fraudsters pulled it off? It’s really simple. They just flipped the burden of proof and put it on the “deniers” — the skeptics, who don’t believe the computer models. With the Left in control of the media, you can do it. So now it’s prove to me you’re not a witch! Because there is no decisive evidence. There are 21 computer models that “prove” global warming over the next century. By the time 2050 rolls around, most of the modelers will be dead."

Why doing nothing may sometimes be the best action of all
Aribeth
by Aribeth  3-15-2008    26
By taking action — even if it’s neither rational nor likely to be successful — they can at least be seen to have done something. If they stand and wait until the ball is kicked and then fail to stop it, they feel worse because of their inaction; and others are far more likely to criticize them for not appearing even to try. It’s better to try a poor action than try a better — but seemingly passive — response if both fail; even though the “inactive” response is more rational and based on a better likelihood of success. In today’s business world, action is preferred over the alternatives and is more likely to result in forgiveness when a mistake is made. You can always say that you tried. The person who does nothing is doubly damned: once for the mistake and again for not “doing something.”This urge to action — to get things done — is more emotional than rational. “Wait and see” risks your credibility and reputation, even where it can be shown to be the optimal course.

Island Wood: City Kids First Visit with Nature & Environmentalism
urbanlife
by urbanlife  2-22-2008
An environmental learning center—nestled into a rustic 250-acre nature preserve—plays a dual role as symbol and teaching tool. "We envision a future in which all people view themselves as lifelong learners, and share an extraordinary bond of stewardship for the environment, for their communities and for each other." Raising of environmental consciousness, one child at a time. “The center is primarily for inner-city kids who don’t have an opportunity to connect with the natural world. And when kids are uncomfortable, they’re not open to learning. So we wanted them to be as comfortable here as possible.” The mission of IslandWood is to provide exceptional learning experiences and to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship.

How to Write Aphorisms
Kore7
by Kore7  1-26-2008    11
Delacroix, Eugene (France, 1798-1863) To be a poet at twenty is to be twenty; to be a poet at forty is to be a poet. According to James Geary, editor of the compendium Geary's Guide to the World's Great Aphorists , a truely memorable, quotable aphorism satisfies five laws: It must be brief. It must be definitive. It must be personal — that's the difference between an aphorism and a proverb. It must be philosophical — that's the difference between an aphorism and a platitude, which is not philosophical.... And the fifth law is it must have a twist. And that can be either a linguistic twist or a psychological twist or even a twist in logic that somehow flips the reader into a totally unexpected place. Now you know, so get to work! :)

U.S. waits for others to save us from oil dependence

As long as this remains the case i will remain skeptical that the U.S. government truly wants to end our dependence on oil. That reality basically means that the needs of lobbyists (Big Oil) are considerably more important than the needs of the people. That depresses me a lot!

My dream for InSTEDD is to fulfill the much-needed role of an independent agent,” said Dr. Larry Brilliant, who first conceived of the idea, “bringing the technological, medical, and organizational skills necessary to help the humanitarian aid community accomplish (early detection of public health threats and disasters), and ultimately help them to make the world a safer place." One of the applications that this project will focus around is the ability that Twitter has to work between the internet and mobile phones.
