POPSDec 26: Unshop on Boxing Day Boxing Day, a stat holiday in Canada, is apparently the BIGGEST shopping day of the year. In keeping with my degrowth mission, Boxing Day is a great UNshopping Day. Lots of good ideas for NOT shopping here. And, of course, don't forget to UNshop on FullCircles / Freecycle / ReUseIt / Freegle, etc.

POPSDegrowth: Books on the topic I started this category on my little bookstore this morning, after being inspired by the Degrowth speech referred to on my other amplifications this morning.

POPSGPI: Genuine Progress Indicator Following on my theme of degrowth, I remembered a few years ago seeing and thinking about the GPI as an alternative measure of success to the GDP. Seems like it's time to give this idea much more serious thought. /e

POPSDegrowth... Degrowth even opposes sustainable development because, while sustainable development aims to address environmental concerns, it does so with the goal of promoting economic growth...

POPSComposting dog waste Backyard solution to your dog waste woes? Mike Levenston at City Farmer, a demonstration garden and compost site run by Canada's Office of Urban Agriculture in Vancouver, B.C. lives in the city and has a dog. The solution, says Mike, is to compost dog waste in yard, using a old plastic garbage can. The folks at City Farmer developed the method, which is one of the most popular tips on the cityfarmer.org web site. The technique provides "a chance where people can have it slowly decompose in a yard and be environmentally safe."

POPSThe North American Way of Life: An unsustainable ponzi scheme? “You can get this burst of wealth that we have created from this rapacious behavior,” ... “But it has to collapse, unless adults stand up and say, ‘This is a Ponzi scheme. We have not generated real wealth, and we are destroying a livable climate ...’ Real wealth is something you can pass on in a way that others can enjoy.”

POPSThe Zero Carbon Caravan ...many people simply do not believe that such a world is possible, so they need a good example giving a practical demonstration of what is possible. This is where the Zero Carbon Caravan comes in (here the word ‘caravan’ is used in the sense of a group of people traveling together, rather than a metal box towed behind a car.) Maltese Falcon (290ft), and co., photo RobertGalbraithWe will demonstrate how it is possible to travel, work and play all without generating any carbon emissions at all. We will provide a positive, inspiring vision of the future, where, instead of merely consuming, we lead fulfilling lives.

POPSWriting PSAs (Public Service Announcements) This will be useful to the many, many volunteer social marketers around the world who run freecycle, fullcircles, reuseit, etc. groups as they struggle to increase membership and participation in these important emerging venues. POPSCommon Wealth: Sustainable future We are in one another's faces as never before, crowded into an interconnected society of global trade, migration, ideas and, yes, risk of pandemic diseases, terrorism, refugee movements and conflict. We also face a momentous choice. Continue on our current course, and the world is likely to experience growing conflicts between haves and have-nots, intensifying environmental catastrophes and downturns in living standards caused by interlocking crises of energy, water, food and violent conflict. Yet for a small annual investment of world income, undertaken cooperatively across the world, our generation can harness new technologies for clean energy, reliable food supplies, disease control and the end of extreme poverty.
