POPSWhat could kill Google? Clipped from an interesting article that illustrates the one vulnerability of Google - that people may some day not need it to find what they're looking for. I myself rarely use Google to find things. Between social media sites, RSS readers, news aggregators and ecommerce sites, it's rare that i need Google to help me find what i'm looking for. Honestly find it surprising that their stats are still so strong...but i suppose it would not shock me if someday we look back on search and think of it as being so web 1.0. That said, even if Google Search ultimately slows down, they are well positioned to be the advertising partner for whoever/whatever takes their place.

POPSLame bing.com segments coming to Jimmy Fallon show I understand that money talks, but watching Jimmy Fallon ask people to search bing.com for answers to questions about travel, health and shopping makes me think of doing one thing - reaching for the remote and changing the channel.

POPSFormer Yahoo CEO was wrong to the tune of $billions Aside from the great extent to which this perspective proved to be wrong, there is a great lesson here...that people who see business models as black and white, or who try to force a model prematurely, can be missing the big picture. Imagine if Google had listened to everyone else who said search will never be a lucrative business. Fast forward to today...I believe that the current excitement about real-time, human filtered search is real and justified. However, i don't necessarily think people have yet figured out exactly how it will be monetized. I also don't think the right solution has yet been introduced. One thing i do know for sure is that amplify is going throw it's hat in the ring and make a run at it.

POPSGoogle to acquire Twitter for real time search? Derek, remember we were talking the other day about the importance of enabling users to search the clogosphere in the relatively near future. Feel pretty strongly that after followers is introduced and working smoothly, we need to spend considerable effort enabling users to search for the latest clips about anything that people are reading.

POPSYahoo turns to Google. Microsoft cries foul. Very interesting move by Yahoo! They may be able to significantly increasing their earnings by integrating Google's search ads on their own site. Talk about a potential blow to microsoft. To think that they're left crying foul about this being anti-competitive after all these years is beyond ironic.

POPSGoogle still kicking Yahoo and Microsoft's ass! The part I actually find most surprising is that over 40% of the U.S. search market doesn't use Google. But considering how hard Microsoft and Yahoo are trying to catch them, it's amazing that they haven't been able to make any progress.

POPSAlexa to give away its index Just waking up so not exactly sure what i think of this other than it sure is innovative and interesting. Click here to read what Om thinks (he's not as bullish about it as John Battelle): http://gigaom.com/2005/12/12/amazons-alexa-commoditizes-search/

POPSFrom John Battelle's editorial in today's Mercury News I recommend reading the entire editorial. Some interesting thoughts about all the data that search engines are/will gather about us as we use their services. A number of these points are further explored in John's book The Search. If you find this editorial interesting, i recommend that you read the book.

POPSYahoo is kicking Google's tush? Found this through Chris Sherman's Search Engine Fourm Spotlight. Strong words i'd say! I do agree that Yahoo is often overlooked in favor of Google, but kicking Google's tush...not sure about that.

POPSGoogle spam blog search Apparently Google's blog search results include a lot of spam blogs. 2 things to point out here. Google blog search needs work (haven't tried it yet as i'm happy with IceRocket and Feedster) and people who create spam blogs suck!

POPSGAOL - really? all i can say is that the blog post i wrote the other day called "Google to buy the Pacific Ocean" (http://clipmarks.blogs.com/ericgoldstein/2005/09/google_to_buy_t.html) was pretty sarcastic, but i'm beginning to think it might be true.

POPSA smart partnership i like this one. sometimes it seems that companies 'partner' just so they can say they do. this one seems smart to me.
