    Google's death grip on Microsoft
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  6-22-2009    2
Not necessarily anything we didn't already know, but this is clipped from an article that clearly articulates the stranglehold Google has over Microsoft as a result of their core philosophies. Management at Microsoft are certainly aware of this - will be very interesting to see how they try to counter it over the next several years.

    What could kill Google?
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  6-10-2009    1
Clipped from an interesting article that illustrates the one vulnerability of Google - that people may some day not need it to find what they're looking for. I myself rarely use Google to find things. Between social media sites, RSS readers, news aggregators and ecommerce sites, it's rare that i need Google to help me find what i'm looking for. Honestly find it surprising that their stats are still so strong...but i suppose it would not shock me if someday we look back on search and think of it as being so web 1.0. That said, even if Google Search ultimately slows down, they are well positioned to be the advertising partner for whoever/whatever takes their place.

I haven't read the full post yet, so i could end up feeling really stupid for posting this clip...but i just read this title and was like, "um, are you kidding me...the web will be the death of Google...for real!?" Ok, now i'm psyched to go read the article and find out why.

Google to acquire Twitter for real time search?

    by egoldstein  4-3-2009    1
Derek, remember we were talking the other day about the importance of enabling users to search the clogosphere in the relatively near future. Feel pretty strongly that after followers is introduced and working smoothly, we need to spend considerable effort enabling users to search for the latest clips about anything that people are reading.

What if everyone had only 1 phone number?
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  3-12-2009    5
With the introduction of Google Voice, it seems that we could all have 1 master phone number that we give out...and then that phone number will be used to ring all our numbers when it's called. I'm too tired to think of the negatives of this, but seems like it could be very helpful.

Love the last sentence..."Where Clipmarks trumps Google Notebook is with its sharing, by letting you publish your clipping for the entire Clipmarks community to see and comment on." That's a tip of the hat to all you clippers out there!!! Yahoo turns to Google. Microsoft cries foul.
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  4-9-2008    1
Very interesting move by Yahoo! They may be able to significantly increasing their earnings by integrating Google's search ads on their own site. Talk about a potential blow to microsoft. To think that they're left crying foul about this being anti-competitive after all these years is beyond ironic.

This is an interesting little excerpt from Google's recent filing regarding the impact that accidental clicks have on their revenue growth. If i had to guess, i'd say i've accidentally clicked on 40 google ads in the past year.

The part I actually find most surprising is that over 40% of the U.S. search market doesn't use Google. But considering how hard Microsoft and Yahoo are trying to catch them, it's amazing that they haven't been able to make any progress.

Awesome to see how much energy google is producing using solar panels. you can even see the energy output just like you would a stock price in google finance. There's been quite a few developments in the past year which should help up the output on future installations like this if they come to market. It'd be great to see google get their net energy use down near 0.

Brazil Indians, Google to fight logging
    jetcloud
    by jetcloud  6-19-2007    2
Eventually, Chief Almir Narayamoga Surui envisions many of the 1,200 members of his Surui tribe using computers with satellite Internet connections and high-resolution images from Google Earth to police all corners of their 618,000-acre reservation. They could then offer proof to authorities that the destruction is occurring and demand action, or possibly spook the loggers and miners away because they would know they are being monitored, said Surui, who uses his tribes' name as his last, like many Brazilian Indians.

"They created a bunch of crap that they have no idea what to do with," said Rob Enderle, principal analyst of the Enderle Group." I think this is big news. Their approach has always been to give engineers freedom (if not incentive) to innovate. Will be fascinating to see how this affects the culture inside google.
