POPSHubris like this is hard to swallow. Given the enormous pain people have experienced over the past few years as a result of the mortgage crisis, and the fact that these banks wouldn't be on their feet if they didn't get a bailout from American taxpayers, it's really hard to fathom the CEO of Goldman Sachs could believe this, let alone say it publicly.

POPSThe Democrats have lost the source of their passion This point by Paul Krugman is so true. Many people who voted for Obama, including myself, did so primarily out of hope that his spirit and belief in change deserved a chance to succeed. My candid perspective is that his spirit began to diminish during his swearing in and has continued to dissipate ever since. It's hard to understand and very frustrating...but i think my feelings of disappointment are shared by many in this country.

POPSGOP uses Amplify to focus the health care debate One of the greatest challenges of our time is trying understand the complex issues being debated in Washington. Whether it's regarding the Swine Flu, global warming or in this case, the proposed health care bill, people need a better way to understand it all. I am incredibly excited that the House Republicans are using Amplify to take transparency to a whole new level in regards to the legislative process. Forgive me for sounding a bit corny, but i think this is truly a great thing for our democracy.

POPSCould Goldman Sachs face massive criminal and civil charges? While I believe that firms who were mislead by Goldman could pose a substantial financial threat to them via civil charges, I find it hard to believe that the SEC and federal government will actually do anything about this - considering that former Goldman employees are in so many powerful positions.

POPSJoe Girardi...the Yankees mis-manager. I amplify'd this from an article that all frustrated Yankee fans should read - on just how absurd Girardi's management approach is. I contend that he is so narcissistic that he doesn't just want to win, he wants to win because of him.

POPSWhat Wall Street should be! It really infuriates me that just months after their near collapse , heeded off only by massive bailouts from taxpayers, major wall street banks have been able to reap ENORMOUS profits and distribute ENORMOUS bonuses while the economy has been stagnant and unemployment has continued to rise. To me, this is de facto evidence that the game is rigged in their favor to the great detriment of the rest of us.

POPSDid Obama get an A for effort? Though the reasoning given for awarding Obama the Nobel Peace Prize is, well, noble, i kind of had the same reaction as expressed in this clip. Seems like he's getting the award for having good intentions. Hopefully the results will match the intentions. If so, then at that time i would think he'd be worthy of this award.

POPSEating healthy to fight depression The connection between physical and mental health seems absolute, so i suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that eating well is not only good for your body, but for your emotional well being too. I don't mean to sound naive or overly simplistic, but if everyone made a commitment to healthier eating and drinking i think it would solve a whole lot of our problems - including bringing down the overall costs of health care. I say this mostly sarcastically, but in some way i feel that people who eat and drink like crap should have to pay higher taxes - there is no doubt their eating habits cause a greater economic burden on society.

POPSTexting instead of sleeping
This is so disturbing. Social media has such wonderful potential, but seeing it used like this is depressing. Call me crazy but i would strongly consider advocating legislation that caps the number of text messages, tweets, status updates, etc. that a minor is allowed to send. God knows how many of them text while driving, putting us all at great risk. Between twitter and text messaging, society's use of social tools to stay connected 24x7 all day, every day just makes no sense to me. Seeing tweets about what people are doing, who they're with, where they're going, what they're eating, what they're watching just makes no sense to me. Who cares! Is there no joy in doing something anymore unless we can instantly tweet about it, upload a photo of it or broadcast it to our 'friends' on facebook? I think there is so much to gain from social media...so much to learn. But right now i feel like people are drunk on the idea and using it extreme ways that will look foolish in hinds

POPS"a bitterness has infected our politics that has weakened our country..." Some excellent commentary by Joe Scarborough, including a fresh, non-partisan perspective on President Obama’s attempt to get the Olympic games in Chicago. I hope/believe that those who follow this approach to politics and partisanship will emerge as the powerful class in Congress. I fully understand that right now those who talk loudest and criticize most harshly get the spotlight. But i think most Americans are pretty tired of it and desensitized to it. It seems to me that most people are looking for leaders who will vigorously and rationally debate the issues - but do so in a way that shows that country comes before party.

POPSIs social media making us safer? I suppose this may seem obvious, but i hadn't really thought about it. I've heard talk about how people shouldn't post things like "on vacation" on twitter because criminals can use that info to go rob your house. But the idea that people have instantaneous ways to get information and reach out definitely suggests that we could become more efficient in crime avoidance. Thinking that a great idea for a new service would be some kind of social network 911 call. Press a certain button and automatically post an alert to the following people via twitter, facebook, sms, etc. Then, using GPS, the people could get your message and your location.

POPSShould there be a legal limit on the volume of our music? This is such a tough call. Like many people, i love listening to loud music on my iphone - some songs just get better and better the louder you make them. But the idea that so many of us are damaging our hearing as a result is upsetting. On the other hand, enjoying loud music is so good for the soul. I suppose like everything else in life, even the volume of our music needs to be enjoyed in moderation.

POPSWe can feel without seeing... This study really amazes me. It seems to suggest that blind people are able to react to something that is shown to them even though they don't 'see' it. I suggest reading the entire article to try to understand - though i must admit i still don't really get it.

POPSHazing at New Jersey's "top" high school This makes me furious. Not just because kids can be so cruel, but because this activity has been going on for over a decade without school administrators putting a stop to it. This is from one of the wealthiest towns in America and a school district that is ranked #1in the state. Man, growing up ain't easy.

POPSWhat is Bodhisattva? I had never heard this term before. Seems to me that the world would be a better place if we all had a greater understanding and appreciation for Buddhism. Just seems to be the practice of goodness.

POPSThe sad truth about social media (via @markwschaefer) I could not agree more with this and it infuriates me. I so badly want Amplify to break without relying on the influence of the so-called 'gang of 2,000' (see this clip about that http://bit.ly/BBKjK). i am hopeful and determined to create a social media experience where the thoughts, opinions, perspectives and ideas of ordinary, honest and bold people rule the day...not the 'you scratch my back - i'll scratch yours" crowd that seems to speak the loudest these days.

POPSBefore the Internet, people used to stop writing This is such an interesting phenomenon. I never really thought about it, but i suppose that if you're job didn't require it, when would you really have a need to write something that included paragraphs. But these days, with all the communication that takes place via email, facebook, twitter, blogs, etc., people are writing way more than ever. An interesting thing i've experienced is that my handwriting has suffered tremendously since almost all my writing is now done via keyboard.

POPSWhy Google bought reCAPTCHA (you'll never guess this) I had no idea that the collective entries people made were self - validating and educating computers on what the letters were...that makes reCAPTCHA about 100x more innovative than i ever realized it to be. For anyone who doesn't know, ReCAPTCHA is the thing you have probably seen many times when you sign up for a new service - when you're asked to enter the scribbled letters in a box.

POPSFacebook says "Twitter is in the rear-view mirror" I guess when you're the size of Facebook and still growing like a weed, you've got a right to pound your chest. By putting themselves in the same class as Google it seems to me that Facebook is positioning itself for a major IPO.

POPSMore allergies = less sex As i'm reading this article about how allergies get in the way of sexual activity i'm thinking to myself "this has gotta be good for Claritin sales" - then i look to the right side of the page and there's a huge ad for Claritin. That's either the best job ever of technology putting the right ad on the right page at the right time, or Claritin paid CNN to publish that article and link to it on their home page. I think the latter. Click thru to the source and take a look. Thoughts?

POPSThe Monty Hall Problem... Would you change your choice? After forming your own opinion (and hopefully stating it below), visit the source to find out the right answer. To me, the answer makes total sense and no sense :)

POPSThe impact of jealousy on facebook and twitter This is such an honest, introspective and important comment about the impact of social media. Sure, social media is fun and cool and all that, but there is no doubt that the typical offline dynamics of envy, jealousy, competition, humility and conceit all play a serious roll in our web relations as well. As i read this post, i was moved by how honest this person was able to be (with themselves and the public). I have, at times, experienced similar feelings and i'm sure many other people have as well.

POPSThis is exactly what's wrong with education - per @mturro This was posted by @mturro as part of a comment on another clip - but i think it's such an important point that it deserves/needs to be Amplify'd. In my opinion, Mike's statement speaks to a fundamental problem with our society: education, whether in the home or in the school, is too focused on positioning people to make money. i strongly believe we'd all be a lot better off is we were instead committed to teaching people for the sake of learning and understanding. I suggest visiting the source of this clip and reading the rest of Mike's comment.

POPSDoes Yahoo think we're a bunch of stupid dogs? When i saw this image on Yahoo's soon to be released "twitter-killer" page, i immediately imagined a conversation inside Yahoo that went something like this: Yahoo exec: why the image of a bunch of dumb dogs? Yahoo marketing person: "well, twitter has a bird so we figured we'd have a few dogs." Yahoo exec: brilliant!

POPSTweeting our brain cells away Though i'm no scientist - and i'd certainly word it a bit differently - i share these sentiments about twitter. To be clear, I think there are many positive aspects of twitter too, but this is certainly one of my criticisms/concerns. I recommend reading the rest of this article...it's thought provoking and insightful about how different sources of entertainment and communication affect us (Twitter, Facebook, video games, etc.)

POPSNot enough consumers in Japan? Pay parents to make more... Seems that the Japanese government is seriously considering paying parents to have babies as a way to stimulate their economy over the long run. Though this seems a bit odd, I suppose an economy can't flourish if it is disproportionately old...and this is one way to rebalance things.

POPSAOL allocates 2 weeks to decide how to reinvent itself After reading this, i'd say that what AOL needs is a new CEO who realizes that you can't make this kind of decision in a week. Though this might be a great idea for a new reality tv show, i think it shows a lack of understanding of what it's going to take to make AOL relevant again.

POPSPlastic made from plants I was just drinking an iced coffee and on the side of the cup it said something to the effect of "this cup is environmentally friendly and was made using plants." I was very curious, so checked out their web site. Seems like a very smart product that could/should hopefully take market share away from plastic.

POPSGen Y sees narcissism as a key to 'success' shame on all the adults who have created a world that breeds this type of thinking. I don't what it's going to take, but i think they're going to learn the hard way that when you only look out for yourself, you end up very much alone. You also have to really be concerned about how 'succeeding' is being defined here - i mean, is everything only measured by money now?!?
