I'll have to give this one a read. If it is half as fascinating as Misquoting Jesus, his last popular work, it'll be great. Watch the video -- get the book!

Modernity and Religion -- usually at odd: at least in America

Once religion was on the side of social justice and progress: now more than often it calls for a return to some out-moded model of society in which "traditional" values is a pseudonym for bigotry.

Prof Coyne's dismantling of religion ...

    by earnric  2-5-2009
Give the full essay a read ... Science and faith are NOT compatible -- not matter how much a person wants to make them coexist in "the same brain" ... as Coyne says requires that with one part of your brain you accept only those things that are tested and supported by agreed-upon evidence, logic, and reason, while with the other part of your brain you accept things that are unsupportable or even falsified. With his usual flair, the physicist Richard Feynman characterized this difference: "Science is a way of trying not to fool yourself. The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool." With religion, there is just no way to know if you are fooling yourself.

So what non-sense is the church putting forth today -- that is impeding science? How about the idea that a ball of 150 or so cells is a human being -- and is thus stifling research into embryonic stem cells. When does the idiocy end?

could it be... ...that people are waking up to the fact that religion is based on superstition and the desire of one group of people to control others? When you can say "god wants you to do this" -- and you believe in god -- it makes it easy.

Seems like a lot of people who comment on an issue I raised don't know what "begging the question" means...
