POPSRoberts goes home... It's always sad when someone's farther, son or loved one dies. However I think all the old ladies who gave their precious few dollars to a charlatan who said "give me $$ or god will take me" are far better off without him around... However, I'm sure the uber-weathly Richard Roberts is proud of the empire his dad built ... proud enough to lead the lifestyle of the rich & famous.

POPSAmazing -- Yes bigotry lives on. Esp among our elected officials. Left to 'ourselves' I'm sure many states and municipalities would also vote to ban interracial marriage... or other 'activities' the majority didn't particularly approve of, but that are (or should be) protected as individual liberties. Thankfully, we have a constitution that guarantees equal protection -- or at least it says that.

POPSThe silliness of trying to legislate love... Sure -- there are some concepts that we (mostly) all agree on; like waiting until children are "of age" before they are allowed to marry ... and the concept of "consensual" relationships. Beyond that, what we've done is allow religious non-sense to get in the way of interpersonal relationships.

POPSThe real threat to marriage ... But many of the religious folks would have you believe two guys living together in Iowa is the real threat to marriage ... while somehow a single, teen mother is now the poster child for abstinence education (which obviously didn't work). Am I missing something here, or is this just really stupid.

POPSThe Believers... Christians carry a cross in Jerusalem ... a symbol of their god. ... but also a symbol of the 10's -- if not 100's of thousands that died brutal, cruel deaths at Roman hands.

POPSJesus interrupted... I highly recommend Ehrman ... His book "Misquoting Jesus" is a big 'heavy' in the academic sense... But his conclusions are justified: A lot of what you read in the bible was put there later, by scribes, who had political agendas. I'm sure this latest book is also a good read.

POPSProf Coyne's dismantling of religion ... Give the full essay a read ... Science and faith are NOT compatible -- not matter how much a person wants to make them coexist in "the same brain" ... as Coyne says requires that with one part of your brain you accept only those things that are tested and supported by agreed-upon evidence, logic, and reason, while with the other part of your brain you accept things that are unsupportable or even falsified. With his usual flair, the physicist Richard Feynman characterized this difference: "Science is a way of trying not to fool yourself. The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool." With religion, there is just no way to know if you are fooling yourself.

POPSFilter of faith... It is interesting how people reconcile an all-knowing, all-powerful god with the REAL world ...
3
POPSDisguised religion... More nonsense about honoring a "moment of silence" in schools. Why do people want this stuff institutionalized. Let kids so what they want with their time: but don't force everyone to contemplate shit they don't believe in...
6
POPSThe evolution of marriage... As recently as 40 years ago, head-of-household laws still subjected wives to the 'dominion' of their husbands... Why aren't these 'traditions' being 'protected'? Because those that decry gay marriage really aren't protecting traditional marriage... They are bigots who don't want a certain group of people to enjoy the same rights they do...
10
POPSIndeed... Why would we heed the bible on MOST topics... If you actually bother to read it, most of it is bronze and iron-age barbarism...
2
POPSLet's call bigots... bigots. There's nothing "protected" by passing constitutional amendments that deny rights to a class of Americans. And when you think about it -- that's really what these amendments do.

POPSAdio to Billy G... Thank goodness -- hopefully he won't be replaced. Political advisors mascarading as preachers make me nausious... & Gramm gave me a big stomach ache. He's a phony just like the rest... Give the wikipedia article a read. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Graham_(evangelist)#Controversy

POPSThe last bit... of idiocy... If Barak O is a Muslim, he must be a bad one -- since he's pro-choice and pro-same-sex marriage. But the average conservative "joe six-pack" doesn't think past the slogans... Apparently, not even when he's writing them out for a bill-board.
2
POPSAt least he admits it... Faith in something that doesn't really exist isn't limited to religious fanatics... Free markets don't exist either... They are created by us -- people -- and ALL of them have rules: man-made rules. Greenspan was one of the faithful. I can at least give him credit for seeing the error in his own ideology. Banks and other institutions ONLY exist because we created them... without rules and regulations they would not be able to function.
4
POPSFaith based leadership... Another example of why the bible is wicked -- and why those that follow it are either truly stupid, or evil themselves... Who even tries to justify such teachings?
0
POPSReligious Non-sense - alive and well today. So what non-sense is the church putting forth today -- that is impeding science? How about the idea that a ball of 150 or so cells is a human being -- and is thus stifling research into embryonic stem cells. When does the idiocy end?
0
POPSMediocre Leadership... Sam Harris points out the fact that we love our politicians... but we love them to be like the "average guy" -- pretty dumb.
0
POPSPalin's prudence... She stands for everything America is NOT... We are NOT a nation built on biblical respect for authority... but on the idea that power emanates from the goverened.
4
POPSSo you think christianity is crazy? Give the Quaran and Islam a try... Kafir girl reads and comments on the book so you don't have too! She also adds some family "insights" to keep things moving... Funny stuff (it so many people didn't take this crap seriously)

POPSChristians & Muslims beleive god wants you to marry only virgins... Or you have to at least believe he USED to require it... cuz there are many passages in the old testament that indicate you should stone your wife if you find out she's not a virgin on her wedding night... I guess god changes his morality based on the age however - since we're not supposed to do this anymore right?
