POPSBush gagged Surgeon General. Health, sex, smoking, cells, religion, Under Bush, the independence of the surgeon general has been placed below industry lobbying and the demands of the religious right. The Bush White House banned Dr Carmona from speaking or issuing reports on stem cells, emergency contraception, sex education, prisons, mental health and international health issues, he has revealed. For years, the White House also tried to "water down" a key report on the dangers of second-hand smoke, he said. When it was published last year , the report stated that even brief exposure to cigarette smoke can cause immediate harm.

POPSHomeland Security confiscates Songwriter Hard Drive Take a guess at the nature of the songs. From the article: "And though Walla's laughing when he mentions Guantánamo, he's not joking when he adds that his record — which he's calling Field Manual — is "very political," packed with songs about issues both foreign ("The Score" tackles the war in Iraq) and domestic ("Everyone Needs a Home" deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; "Sing Again" is about so-called "morning after" pills and whether they're a form of contraception or abortion). Easy listening, this is not."

POPSNo Sex for Homos Here's my problem with the "gays should be celibate" approach. Why should I expect less and accept less from life because I happen to be gay? Most people, including lots of gay people, aren't cut out for celibacy. That's why they call it the "give of celibacy." Not everybody gets it. Why not advocate a model for gays & lesbians to find a healthy, life-affirming way to express their sexuality and integrate it into their lives? Why not encourage committed monogamous relationships among gays & lesbians?

POPSThe Fundagenitals Strike Again A hint of desperation begins to appear as the Bush presidency runs out of time. In their never ending quest to control women and prevent them from obtaining health care, they're running to pass legislation that attempts to make an end run around the law by using the pretext of religion to deny a woman access to contraceptives by conflating them with abortion. Luckily, so far their narrow religious tenets have been held in check by more tolerant voices. But make no mistake, these Religious Right activists will not stop their campaign to impose their views on the rest of the nation.

POPS"Pro-Lifers" Plan National Protest of Contraception And before you despair that your right to privacy is being lost, take comfort in the knowledge that once we all finally live in a country where ideology is valued over evidence and our government is run by and for those who subscribe, or succumb, to the exciting agenda of these groups...privacy will no longer be needed. Your point of view and way of life will, conveniently, be decided for you. So what are you waiting for?! Sign up now!

POPS220,000 condoms off to Myanmar I think I'm going to be ill. This is a priority of the UN? This is where our tax dollars go? When people are starving, unhoused, grieving, disease threatened...the UN wants to make sure these desperate people receive enough condoms?? FTA: "Cyclone Nargis left at least 133 000 people dead and missing, and aid groups had complained that supplies were not getting to survivors quickly enough because of limitations imposed by the ruling junta." Now there's a problem that the UN needs to remedy and address. (stuck on stupid indeed!)

POPSMiddle school will provide birth control pills, patches Is the school not opening itself up for lawsuits? How can a minor (11-13 years old) be expected to understand the consequences of using hormones? The pill is effective if it is used properly, and without parental knowledge who can say if a woman this young is really capable of that? Would this not be a false sense of security? What is wrong with condoms? No hormones in those. No prescription needed. What do you think?

POPSI'm not "Pro-Choice." I'm Anti-Busybody It's far more accurate to term militant anti-abortion activists as anti-choice than pro-life. Why? Because their own reasoning and rhetoric, as well as causes they support as well, show a complete disregard for human life that exists without adhering to their punitive moralistic code - and are entirely willing to call for the death (by stoning) of those who violate it. I'm not "for" abortion. I'm not "for" stomach-stapling, either. But in either case, I believe circumstances dictate cases.

POPSIn virus we trust i believe that birth control ban has and is used as a weapon by religious institutes (all alike). ignorance, refraining from responsibility are other examples of viruses that bans as such are preventing us from treating.

POPSGet Your Coathangers Ready Anyone who believes that this has nothing to do with banning abortion is a fool. The other troubling point is that it, as mentioned in the article, could also affect birth control. Welcome to 1950 folks. Once again religious ideology takes precedent over rational thought. Once again, emotional pleading trumps reasoned, rational discourse.

POPSDr refuses to prescribe emergency contraception to rape victim The mother of the victim went on the Donny Deutsch show and argued with the head of a pro-life physicians group. What is notable is the conservative position of the mother and Deutsch--they do not even want to force the doctor to prescribe the contraception, they just wanted the doctor to inform the victim of all of her options.

POPSWomen as Appliances Should women be regarded as incubators by the state? Can the idea of "souls" be used in a legal venue to justify such treatment?

POPSBaby Killer to be re-sentenced. This woman is clearly not healthy and I think the first part of her sentencing should be sterilization. Perhaps just chemical, forced contraception or something, but she should NOT be allowed to have any more babies, at any time, ever again in the future. Ever.

POPSTolerance vs. Intolerance Doctor 1: "I believe that the problem is focused on your gall bladder. We are going to have to remove it." Doctor 2: "No! The evidence clearly shows that this condition is caused by a bacteria. We should start the patient on antibiotics" Doctor 1: "I do not see why you militant bacterialists simply refuse to tolerate the opinions of us defective organists. We have as much of a right to our opinion as you do. We have a sick patient here. We should learn to tolerate each other's beliefs and work together." I don't know about you, but as soon as I heard Doctor 1 make that statement, I'm firing him as my doctor. Clearly, he does not understand what medicine is about and that treating a patient involves finding the best treatment based on the available evidence.
