POPSThe mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley
It is one big mystery that a stone that weighs more or less like a man can move on its own. This has become quite a puzzle for the past decade. The mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley have been discovered to slide over valleys that people do not live in. These valleys are filled with dry cracking muddy ground during summer and ice during winter. Many geologists have gone to all the places in Racetrack Playa and its surrounding. The mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley slide on very smooth ground and leave a trail behind. Some geologists came up with the conclusion that the mysterious sailing stones of death valley move through the smooth ground when the mud is wet and the stones have little ice droplets on them with the help of the wind. This is however not entirely true because the stones move during the summer when the temperature is too high and even dries the stones themselves. I saw this 50 years ago on some old TV show It's not new, I mean.

POPS"Alien" Jellyfish Found in Arctic Deep Jellies are among the least understood groups of animals on Earth, Raskoff added. "They seem about as alien as animals get." Scientists plan to research more of the unexplored Arctic waters before warming and ice melt drastically transforms the ocean environment, according to NOAA's Web site. Biologists are realizing that jellyfish are more common predators in the oceans than thought.

POPS What's This? A Martian Tatoo? Amazing new pics from Mars Orbiter. To our human visual conceptions of what things look like and/or what things should look like out of any real context this picture resembles rolls of fleshly look-alikes and the bluish scribbles appear to some of us, as something Earthly. If you want more on the dust devils the links that are not from Wikipedia, and are from NASA are pretty informative. There are also picture of rising columns here on Earth.

POPSThe Door to Hell Well...so much for resource conservation You'd think some one of those Russian scientists would be able to figure out a way to extinguish the darn thing, but maybe they just don't care. 35 years burning endlessly is an awful waste I must say. Any combustible gas can be converted into a useful resource.

This coming October's celebration of the dead, I think we should try to use different veggies and fruits to carve. Who says it;s gotta be a pumpkin? I love that little green apple!

POPSBicycler's Dream Home Away From Home I like this one. It weighs less than I do, not counting the bike. The only thing that scares me is the Iron Lung look. I want my head inside with the rest of me. Maybe he cut that hole as an after thought that some people are longer than 5'6". Still a nice idea though.

POPSColossal 1,000 lb Squid
These scientists could be called real cut-ups. 1,000 Pound Colossal Squid Thawed in NZ y Calimari-sicles for 10,000, please. Scientists from New Zealand have begun the process of thawing and dissecting a squid corpse that they’ve kept in a freezer for the past year. It is huge, weighing in at half a ton. The mysterious “colossal squid,” (the larger cousin of the giant squid), was caught last year by fishermen, who were obviously quite shocked to see such a beast in their nets. This specimen, at 26 feet long and 1089 pounds, is a far cry from what scientists project to be a full size for the species– over 15m long. The researchers, are planning to remove the beak, stomach, and sex of the animal before putting it on display in a tank of formaldehyde. Scientists are excited about the possibility of having found the fist-ever male of the species, and the largest colossal squid to have been examined to date. Last year they were able to dissect a 660-pound female, the first

POPSSuper Bacteria Check this baby out ! Deinococcus radiodurans is a fabulous bacteria. It may well be our servant to help us explore new worlds. These are the same bacteria you may have already heard of, but have forgotten. Back in the '70s they were adapted to help clean uo those nasty oil spills. Now we are heading into new territories, such as cleaning water & oxygen, and adapting to humans for survival on other planets. If you really want to see what's going on click on the links to further your education about them and your curiosity.

POPSBomber Worms "We came across them and thought they were very interesting, firstly because of their bioluminescence," she said. Each of the seven species found so far is transparent apart its gut, and all of the worms produce colourful bioluminescence. The researchers are now investigating what chemicals the animals produce to give rise to their striking glow. The animals are also excellent swimmers - using fans of long bristles that form swimming paddles. There is a silent video on the page, if you'd like to see them swim. The rest of the article explains the "bombing aspects of the creatures.

POPSFairy Rings English folklore, fairy rings were said to be caused by elves, fairies or pixies dancing in a circle, wearing down the grass beneath their feet. Toads would then sit on the mushrooms, poisoning them; hence the name toadstool. In Sussex they were called, “hag tracks”, in Devon people thought that fairies caught young horses and rode them in circles. Another myth states that fairy rings are doors into the fairies' world, transporting people to other places or making people appear in the same place in a different time. Young ladies are also warned not to touch the dew on the grass within the ring, as it is believed that it can cause skin problems. One of the largest rings ever found is in France. It is thought to be about 800 m in diameter and over 700 years old. an old medieval belief that the rings represented places where witches would have their gatherings. In Austria people thought that dragons' breath burned the land. Interesting, views on a natural phenomena.

POPSDecadent ? The first scratch, would be the last scratch. You'd need a security guard for it everywhere you went. The owner must be a very self-indulgent person with a dash of impotence. Did I mention this is in post Soviet Russia? Somebody is doing something capitalistic over there, and doing it well, I'd say.
