"If they want to stop it, they need to stop it now."

Now liberals are saying that the welfare clause takes precedence over the very amendments that limit it and it can be used to reduce rights under the amendments like the health care bills would do to the 9th and 10th Amendments, among others. This means that Congress can do anything it wants by claiming it is for "the general welfare"; they could re-institute slavery, abolish freedom of speech entirely, or take away a woman's right to vote.

I have to say, the worst allegation I've heard about Chris Dodd is not that he's in the pocket of banks and insurers--financial companies naturally seek to curry favor with the Senate Banking Committee, but I don't really see the case that he's sold us out for his benefit. No, the more damning case is that the Senate Banking Committee was basically non-functional in the early part of the crisis, because Dodd was running for president. Even if early action could have saved us money and pain later--and that's a big if--I recently heard a plausible case made that such action was made impossible by his presidential campaign. But somehow, no one finds that offensive, or even notable.

These raucous dinners and big expense-account tabs should be vetted for ethics violations. Of course, it didn’t stop with steaks and fine wines. PMA funneled more than $40 million in donations to members of Congress since 1998, including $2.4 million to Mr. Murtha and $7.8 million to members of his committee. Congress, in turn, rewarded PMA clients with rarely debated earmarks. Last year, the firm was able to marshal more than 100 lawmakers to earmark $300 million in contracts for the lobbyist’s clients. Ms. Pelosi cannot ignore this sorry churn of taxpayer money. Newcomers and moderates are right in warning that if the House majority doesn’t police itself, it will lose credibility all the way to the next election.

POPSEnd the Bailouts and Protect Capitalism Earlier this month, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) forced a vote on the elimination of Congress’s automatic annual pay raises. After some political gamesmanship, the Senate tabled his amendment. Last week, though, senators rethought their opposition and passed Vitter’s bill by voice vote. Taxpayers cannot claim victory yet, though -- House leaders seem disinclined to take up the measure. Somehow I can picture Pelosi speaking to Reid about this, behind closed doors of course.
