POPS$100 Million Payday Poses Problems for Pay Czar
In our capitalist society, we cannot begrudge corporations making a profit, as long as they do it legally. Also, outsiders do not have any say in how these businesses spend their money, whether it goes to improving their products, expanding their business our throwing it at their staff. In these hard financial times, our government saw fit to bailout that corporate sector that they thought needed it the most. Two major problems I had with this is that they were bailed out at all, because since we are a capitalist society businesses will find a way to make it by their own ingenuity or they should not be in business in the first place. Secondly, the amount of money given to these corporations and the fact that there was no oversight was way out of line and borders on criminal negligence. Obviously, they were given too much money or they would not be able to give bonuses and still plan on staying in business. Our government screwed tax payers again.

POPSOutrage over risqué slogans What the hell has happened to our morality? Before all you impassioned ‘freedom of speech’ advocates go crazy I want you to picture your pre-teen daughter wearing a shirt that says ‘I’m Easy’ and tell me what you think after you find out she was molested and killed just because freedom of speech should be applied everywhere. How are these slogans considered funny when placed on children’s clothing? Sexualizing children may be ‘cute’ to some sick twisted adult but to place slogans of this nature on children’s clothing is degenerate. We have children sexually attacking one another. If parents would take more responsibility to the message we are sending children with this garbage then perhaps society would not have to deal with so many sex crimes. Wishful thinking I know, but this behavior disgusts me. I’m all for freedom of speech but damn it control yourselves.

POPSRep. Sally Kern’s Proclamation for Morality
Sally Kern’s Party of Jesus, formerly known as the Republican Party, has found the cause of all of our woes, oh happy day! According to Sally, the nation's current problems are due to our overly permissive society’s acceptance and promotion of gays, abortion, divorce, and all around lack of Christian faith. From the Proclamation: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we the undersigned elected officials of the people of Oklahoma, religious leaders and citizens of the State of Oklahoma, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world, solemnly declare that the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the HOLY BIBLE. She’s a very conflicted person. She calls herself a Christian but hates people who do not follow her faith. In fact she and her Baptist preacher husband disowned one of their sons for being gay. How Christian is that? http://www.queerty.com/sally-kern-scrubs-gay-son-20080312/

POPSUncle Sam Enters the Great Nanny State Debate Obama calls for “a new era of responsibility” and conservatives say this undermines personal responsibility? I think it challenges corporations to exercise responsibility in what they pass off as ‘healthy’ to consumers. If raising taxes on unhealthy products works to stop people from buying this junk then so be it. It’s not a matter of morality, it’s a matter of health. A healthier populace will cut down on health care costs. Hopefully, everyone can agree on this point.

POPSThe Public's Growing Acceptance of Torture is Equivalent to the Suicide of America's Soul If this poll is accurate, I am sorely disappointed. 52% believe that torture can be used at least sometimes to interrogate would-be terrorist suspects? Are we that scared of possible attack that we would jeopardize holding our heads as a proud nation who does not resort to torture? The author thinks its in part due to it becoming a political issue. I think its in part a reflection of how violent America is becoming. The author, just as many others before him have, presents a very good argument against accepting torture. From the article: “I would rather take the risk that my life may one day be lost due to a terrorist attack than stoop to taking actions that tears at the fabric of the American spirit. I may die but that is a risk I am willing to take.”

POPSIf Obama Cedes Ground to Cheney, We’ll All Pay a Heavy Price Excellent commentary by Gary Younge on why we need moral leadership. Americans are sorely lacking in moral leadership. For fear of being labeled unpatriotic, congress allowed an illegal war in Iraq. For fear of being labeled unpatriotic congress is allowing torture, an affront to America’s core values, to go unpunished. For fear of being labeled unpatriotic Americans are being forced to accept that patriotism is taking on a new face. It has now become patriotic to follow our leadership into an immoral abyss. It is now official: we rule out of fear rather than principle. If our founding fathers were alive today, this would kill them. Do we have the choice to turn this situation around? Yes. Do we have what it takes to pull it off? I fear the answer is no, but I hold hope that someone will find the ability to make it happen.

POPSNext Stop for the Atheist Bus: Chicago You know what a pain born again Christians can be, constantly trying to convince you that their ‘new found’ religion is the only way to go and you are going to hell if you don’t convert right now, today, blah, blah, blah? Well, atheists have finally found my last nerve too. Why are they so driven to show the ‘error’ in believers ways? This manic need to convince is like a religion to them. The only thing I want to say is allow everyone else to believe what they want. Personally, I don’t think it is necessary to have a super natural entity to guide you through life. Just don’t be responsible for bringing any harm or loss to anyone else and we should all be fine. The bottom line is that there can be no ‘proof’ that there is or is not a God. Therefore, neither ‘side’ is correct or wrong.

POPSFort Hunt's Quiet Men Break Silence on WWII Ah, the good old days, when you softened someone up by gaining their confidence and then stabbed them in the back. :) Of course, people are much different today. I seriously doubt a steak dinner today would get a suspected terrorist to spill his guts. Still, it goes to show that information can be obtained by more humane methods than torture.

POPSTime to find corporate billions kept offshore
Tax evasion is basically theft and can be secondarily considered treason. The tax system is set up to benefit the general population through maintenance of infrastructure, paying the military, paying our politicians, etc. American corporations making a profit from doing business in the U.S. and conducting their business through overseas subsidiaries to avoid U.S. tax laws are in effect stealing from the American public. This leaves the bill for these government supported services to be footed by honest tax payers. This is also an issue of morality and ethics. Corporations take and use all the benefits of living and working in America but don’t pay for the privilege. These corporations need to step up and pay their fair share of being allowed to do business in America. Politicians will never force the issue because they are benefiting from these corporations doing business here. We all need to raise our voices high and boycott those corporations that are stealing from

POPSAmerica Is in Need of a Moral Bailout Moral nihilism. The author of this commentary, Chris Hedges, has been able to put into words the sentiment I have felt about this nation for a very long time. Our educational system has gone to hell in favor of supplementing corporations and the military, instead of producing thinkers addressing the larger moral questions of meaning and purpose. We give ourselves too easily to the influence of reality television, mass media, and cultural assumptions. Our capacity to be affected by human rights issues has been relegated to the occasional financial gift because it makes us feel better, if we bother to give at all. We turn a blind eye to American corporations involvement with environmental and wildlife destruction as long as we get the latest new product we think we must have. We subjugate our dignity to the never-ending thirst for more money, things, and power. Where has our value system gone? What has it been replaced with? Moral nihilism.

POPSIsraeli Army T-Shirts Mock Gaza Killings This is truly reprehensible. The sentiment displayed on these shirts serves to perpetuate the animosity and hatred these two nations have for each other. Anyone who condones this type of behavior is undermining any chance to seek a peaceful resolution to their differences. Having said that, and judging from past behavior between these two, I don’t believe for a minute that either side truly wants to find peace with each other but to so blatantly display and promote the killing of pregnant women and children is beneath contempt for human life. And there in lies a major problem this world needs to deal with.
