POPSChallenging Authority for Good Speading the truth about our over-consumptive consumer culture and our modern food system can benefit us all tremendously. The more aware we become the healthier we will become. It’s a domino effect, we eat healthier, we stay away from health-related problems, we pay out less for health care, we live longer. I mean, where’s the downside? The blog lists some great learning sources: books, videos, and online sites that encourages we take part in global issues ranging from climate change to organic foods to clean water. We need to get this next generation interested and take advantage of their fresh ideas and youthful energy to keep it going. BTW, I've read all the books listed on the blog, except one and I just reserved that one at my library. They are very well written, informative and entertaining. Go get your self educated, trust me it won't hurt.

POPSProtesters Descend on Chevron for Climate Justice
“Chevron has the opportunity to do the right thing,” said Mayor of Richmond, Gayle McLaughlin. “They just need to agree to capping the crude at the level they currently refine. We want them to put Richmond’s residents to work modernizing and replacing the 80 year old boilers, which sadly they chose to remove from the project several months ago. ” “We want Chevron to build a cleaner and safer refinery,” said Ana Orozco of Communities for A Better Environment. ”We want the union jobs to continue to build a refinery that is cleaner and safer for our community. Our community has been put at risk for too long.” Of course Chevron would greet the peaceful protesters with a heavy police presence. Chevron has the mindset that they have the power to do anything they want without regard to how they poison people and the environment. They are championed by governments around the world who value money over the conditions of people’s lives. Chevron: agent of Corprafascism.

POPSFactory farms get a pass on reporting greenhouse gas emissions
A lot of us question why Americans should care about livestock poop, particularly in the context of greenhouse gas emissions. Animal manure and livestock produce methane and nitrous oxide, which are about 23 and 300 times respectively stronger than carbon dioxide. According to the EPA GHG Inventory, manure is the 5th largest source of methane and the 4th largest source of nitrous oxide in the U.S. It results in more than twice as many emissions as waste incineration and natural gas systems in the U.S. The way in which CAFOs pool their manure is a large part of the problem. When stored in pits and lagoons as is typical on factory farms, the manure breaks down anaerobically, in the absence of oxygen, which exacerbates methane emissions. The EPA has acknowledged that when manures are distributed on pastures as would be typical in a grass-fed animal system, methane production is limited. Thus, there are proven ways to reduce methane emissions in manure management.

POPSFood Not Bombs Continues to Ignite Controversy What is wrong with feeding the hungry? This is a very noble cause these people are supporting. Why does our government force them to get permits for this? Food that would otherwise be thrown away is being eaten. The chapter in New Mexico has attracted unwanted attention from law enforcement and the Environmental Health Division in their activities. The Connecticut group was recently ticketed for ignoring a cease and desist order issued by local police for serving food form an unlicensed kitchen. The Arizona group has been told by city hall that they will need a permit to continue their activities. In Florida the group secured a legal victory when a judge ruled that handing out food in a public space was an activity protected by the First Amendment Go to the clip to find more info on each group.

POPSWater Wars Strike Ahead of Predictions Since 2008, the duration and frequency of rainfall in major parts of the state of Madhya Pradesh has been decreasing. Water levels in all major water bodies have fallen to alarming levels. As a result, most parts of the state including the capital city of Bhopal is receiving almost half of the volume of water required to fulfill the population’s needs. The poor are the most impacted and drinking water is being supplied only about once every 4-5 days in the slums and other poorer localities. There is a simultaneous increase in the number of violent clashes and over 50 of them have been reported in capital city in the month of May. Media reports suggest that since January over 12 people have been killed and dozens other injured mostly fighting over a bucket of water. And such fights are becoming more frequent and of regular occurrence. The situation has also severely impacted the public health and safety system.

POPSObama gives biofuels the big thumbs up
On the surface this may seem like a good idea, but the mandate to, by 2022, have up to 15 billion gallons of corn ethanol counted toward the 36 billion gallon biofuel production level will only worsen its effect on food production. We’re at 6-9 billion gallons of corn ethanol now and with all the havoc that has wreaked on agriculture worldwide, the concept of almost tripling that amount over the next 20-odd years is terrifying. What may yet save us is the fact that it will likely prove a simply impossible standard to meet. And the fact that the administration’s rationale for expanding the use of biofuels continues to be the misplaced desire “to reduce our dependence on foreign oil” is just ludicrous. Addressing climate change WILL reduce our dependence on foreign oil. But simply reducing dependence on foreign oil won’t save the planet—only zeroing out our carbon emissions will do that. So energy policy in this country must be seen through that one, single lens.

POPSGlobal Cooling: An Inconvenient Fact Crisis. What Crisis? The fact is, the planet is cooling. Earth has gone through this cycle of cooling and warming many times, long before mankind ever showed up. True we are adding to the problem but nature will make adjustments.

POPSSaving the World From Death by Coal I know this is a bit dated, but it bears repeating for those who missed it. A group of over 2,500 people from all across the country marched on the coal fired power plant in our nation's capitol which for over 100 years has supplied heat and electricity to Congress by burning coal. More actions in the form of civil disobedience directed against coal power plants are planned in the near future. As the world prepares for the UN COP15 Conference in Copenhagen this December, it is a critical year for, as Bill McKibben said, "creating a political space for a climate treaty to be finalized." Time's up.
