@CodyBrown on how Twitter can save itself
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  8-28-2009
Cody Brown's blog post comparing Twitter to MySpace and its ultimate demise (http://bit.ly/AC5Bp) garnered a lot of attention recently. I personally thought it was a well thought out argument. At any rate, he decided to offer up a remedy of sorts when asked what he would do if he were Twitter...pretty dramatic suggestion.

    @mashable launches social ad creator

    by dgreplay  8-17-2009
Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, i have to give Mashable credit for consistently inovating; first with pumping corporate tweets into ads and now the social ad creator, which seems like a very cool idea. On the other hand, i'm finding them to be less credible as an social news source as the lines have become blurred given their participation in joint ventures (or perhaps even ownership?) of companies they often cover.

    Twitter + "Opt-in" Beacon = Justbought.it?
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  8-1-2009    1
I was initially pessimistic about this concept. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how great people's desire to publish their lifestream is...including what they purchase. As an opt-in service rather than what beacon tried to do, it might just work. I have not tried the service and the execution of the idea is critical, but there are potential ecommerce, lead generation, and advertising opportunities that could provide justbought.it with a rare money making formula.

Forget all the snarky chatter about twitter for a minute and take a look at this awesome error message i got when I went to check out a user from a new follower email link. Its very direct, but the humor in the messaging just takes the edge off the jarring experience you get landing on a page you never expected to see...briliant. Kudos to the development team.

The Future of Social Networking is...Email?!
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  7-17-2009
I've been thinking about this very idea recently and then came across this article from @jeremiah. I was mostly coming at it from a product and user experience perspective. It seemed that a some of the 3rd party services based on Twitter (and Twitter too) have been coming full circle and deploying email-like strategies for both functionality (routing, groups, etc.) as well as the presentation layer (check out seesmic's list view on the web). Think also about how important email is to Twitter and facebook's user experience: where would they be without "now following" or "comment" emails? In the meantime, while those guys duke it out, Google has been infusing the social piece into their apps, and they've been doing it for some time now. With the recent social networking enhancements to GReader (in addition to GShare) they seem to be at it in ernest. Given the reliance on emails to bridge relationships between user/service and user/user, plus the adoption of gmail (among other G built pl

Twitter: Part of NBA Draft History?
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  6-25-2009
The NBA entry draft has come a long way. When the NBA decided to hold the first draft lottery in 1985 the league was entering the height of what many consider its golden era with Magic, Bird, Dr. J, and of course MJ. I mostly remember the look on Dave DeBusschere's face when he realized the Knicks had won the lottery - the right to select Patrick Ewing. But, I think what stood out more was the broadcast, it literally looked like your local station's nightly "pick 6" studio remote...ping pong balls and all. That's it. So much interest and simply no chance for average fans to be part of the action. Fast forward to tonight. Now, you can interact with other fans, current and former NBA players, and even celebrities in real-time on Twitter...now thats what I call access.

    Facebook: The Movie!

Some serious heavyweights tapped to direct, pen, and produce Zuck's story. I can't help but think both Facebook and Twitter will see some major bumps in new users on the heels of this release. If there is such a thing or term as "social network capitulation" - that is, the majority of hold outs who finally join the party - this movie might just be the catalyst. Now, anyone want to offer up a suggestion on who plays Zuckerberg? Here's mine...

Seriously, this just sounds like a terrible idea. I understand that people thirst for making connections with each other but with Twitter, texting, etc. how will our children learn to communicate without an intermediary like a laptop or a smart phone? Ranting here a bit but my point is this: can't we simply watch a drama, comedy, documentary, movie, game, etc. online without all the distractions? People complain about pre-roll or in-video ads online all the time...but its okay to be peppered with commentary every minute or two? Sounds like someone dusted off the old "Pop up video" concept and shoe horned it into a sociaI video application to me. I don't get it.

Not sure what to make of this actually, but one thing is certain: the Ad Men are coming to Twitter. If I was part of LRs direct advertising team I would surely look into social media and of course, Twitter. That said, I'm just not sure this was the best strategy for Land Rover. Yes, it appears they can target by geos, demos, and interests but I'm not sold on simply using Twitter as more contemporary WOM/buzz media buy. I probably shouldn't dismiss this too quickly, but Land Rover has always tapped into the spirit of adventure, and I'm wondering if they could have looked to other services that would have worked together with Twitter to make for a more compelling UX. Tough to tackle that via paid microbloggers. One other quick note: Land Rover typically appeals to a slightly older (35-49) demo with greater HHI than what most people associate with Twitter users - more anecdotal evidence to compare with recent Comscore data suggesting the largest growth segment on social networking platfo

Navigating the Challenges of the Real-Time Web

Interesting post by Jeremiah from Forrester. Trying to keep up with the info flow is indeed a challenge and like he notes, Friendfeed's "pause" button in its redesign is a nod to the issue. One of the great features of Amplify Clogs is that the entire conversation stays with the content - on a permalink. So, if I've missed a Twitter or FB update, but i've "followed" a Clog, i'm notified and can catch up on my time, even though I've missed "it" in real-time...Kind of like Tivo for social media ;)
