In case you can't get enough of the NFL Draft...
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  7-24-2009
Sure, the NFL and ESPN are going to take a hit here by some who believe they are just being gluttonous. Maybe, but I'll put a more virtuous spin on it. With this new format, the NFL is in fact, going to help the economy and in particular, small business. Every bar owner from South Boston to San Diego has got to be cheering this move as they will surely see greater receipts for the entire weekend. To be sure, they can use the boost right now to help cover their monthly nut. Plus, Anheuser-Busch and the other beverage and spirits makers as well as everyone in between get extra business. That means people keep jobs - even for just a bit longer. How about that, maybe the 3 day draft can actually save a job of an NFL fan. Okay, I'm a dreamer, but for that idea alone I'll support it this change...even though I don't like the idea one bit.

Jack Kemp: Pro Football's Founding Father?
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  5-3-2009
Not quite, but few people under 50 are even aware of Jack Kemp's pro football career prior to his life as a long time politician. Truth is, while he struggled early in his career, Jack Kemp was a very good QB. But, more than that, he played a significant part in the building of the modern NFL we know today. Professional sports is often filled with irony and none is more noticeable upon Jack Kemp's death than Mark Sanchez' arrival to the Jets. Why? Well first, because he's a QB (thin, I know...but it gets better) and none has electrified the NY Jets by simply being drafted, since Joe Namath in 1965. Second, like Kemp, Namath was a star and was probably the key catalyst in the emergence of the AFL. Third, and most importantly, I don't think there would be a Joe Namath if Jack Kemp hadn't paved the way (with others, of course) in legitimizing the fledgling AFL beginning with Kemp's first season in 1960. Players like Mark Sanchez and others from teams like the Raiders, Chargers, Jets, Tit

NFL Draft: Trade Down at Your Own Peril
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  4-23-2009
The draft day war rooms are likely at DEFCON 3 right now and the phone lines will start heating up by midday tomorrow. Then, and for the following 24hrs, every team inside the first 10 picks will have to make some very big decisions. Chief among them will be whether to trade down from the heights of the top ten in return for a proven talent or take a flier on multiple picks. Many people believe trading down is not such a big deal anymore given the recent success of players chosen later in the draft - and no franchise in recent memory has done this more to perfection than the New England Belichiks and their poster boy, Mr. Gisele Bundchen a.k.a Tom Brady (6th round). I suppose the escalation in salaries coupled with economy's squeeze on fans ability to purchase tickets will give NFL owners pause before paying up for top ten talent. However, the decision not to do so can set back an organization for years. To be sure, just take a look at the 1977 NFL draft. The Seattle Seahawks' chose t

Okay draftniks, eight days and counting til' the NFL's college entry draft - the day every local NFL fan hopes will change the course of their franchise overnight. It can happen, just look at the Steelers' class of 1974. Anyone want to make an argument for one of their teams' draft classes?

The Tragic Story of Todd Marinovich Continues...
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  4-4-2009
If for some reason you were wondering who was professional sports most confounding, bizarre, enigmatic, and down right depressing figure you need look no further than Todd Marinovich. This latest arrest further underscores how tragic his his life has become. His story is too long to tell but the short version goes something like this: Son of a USC football team captain and national champion; he is raised in a virtual bubble bred for athletic achievement. Top high school QB in the country and 1987's U.S. HS scholar athlete. Recruited by Stanford, BYU, Miami, USC, etc. Can't miss prospect. Enters USC and as red-shirt freshman kills it, beats Michigan in Bo Schembechlers final game. Chapter two: trouble starts, leaves after soph season. Drafted 1st round by Oakland. Downhill from there. Several false starts again in B league football, addiction, accusations of rape, jail, street life, etc. If your in the mood for a immediate buzz kill you can read the deets here: http://tinyurl.com/cvxcd

Tom Brady: Best Ever...but not Best Team
    dgreplay
    by dgreplay  1-13-2008
Tom Brady is the best QB of all-time...the end. But, while i do believe the Pats are better than the '72 phins, no way they beat the '85 Bears for a one game "best team ever" playoff. If good pitching beats good hitting, then good defense beats good offense...no defense was better IMO...its the Ditkas by a field goal.
