LA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit
    deadcowkid
    by deadcowkid  10-28-2008
US: LA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit "Why add to the suffering of rape victims by making them wait years to investigate and prosecute their cases -- or letting a prosecution go forward without this evidence?" said Sarah Tofte, a US Program researcher at Human Rights Watch who is researching the rape-kit backlog in Los Angeles and around the country. "The department needs to use its own budget and any future grants to make sure the job gets done." Timely testing of rape kits can be critical to bringing justice to sexual assault victims. It is often difficult to solve or prosecute a rape case effectively without this forensic evidence. Furthermore, under California law, there is no statute of limitations for bringing a case if the rape kit is tested within two years. But if it is not tested in that time frame, the statute of limitations is 10 years. "I want to thank Human Rights Watch for effectively pushing this issue into the forefront of the public arena," sai

The response, "hell no." Then he asked me, "well can you please do me a favor?" To which I responded some of the same and we both pointed our fingers at him to call it out. Also to note, there was at least one person dressed in all black (hood and bandanna too) who was definitely wearing an ear piece. There was a woman not in your photos who was wearing black clothing (not bloc style but more plainclothes like, maybe sunglasses too, can't quite remember) who was walking by me, not looking directly but I could tell she had me in the peripheral vision. Camera was held down by her waist as if she were 'just carrying it', but I noticed that the lens was pointed near my face as she was nonchalantly walking. I definitely saw her click the shutter at this point. Did anyone else notice the "window washers" on the

he agencies are also prepared to heavily haze, capture and slaughter buffalo this year based on Yellowstone's estimate of 4,700 individual buffalos. Though Yellowstone biologists have stated time and again that the Park could sustain well over 5,000 buffalo, the Interagency Bison Management Plan's politically derived population cap for wild buffalo living in Yellowstone is 3,000. Based on this, the agencies could capture and kill upwards of 1,700 buffalo.

Fun Questions to ask the Cops when being harrased for sleeping.
    deadcowkid
    by deadcowkid  12-20-2007
These questions come from the time tested "Know Your Rights" role playing format, pioneered by Rico Thunder and Jason, who often teach Free School classes on your rights and how to use them. They role play in uniform. Free School is a concept used in Santa Cruz for everything from learning a foreign language, to knowing how to face the cops with the knowledge of your rights. The "ask to be taken to the Magistrate" is a great tool, just not on a Friday, or you may wait in jail until Monday. Start a free School in your town.

Santa Cruz Sleeping Ban Debate Rages
    deadcowkid
    by deadcowkid  11-29-2007    3
In subsequent stories--the Sentinel highlighted graffitists who painted “F#ck the Sleeping Ban” on City Hall. In their on-line forum subsequently, the bigots that rule over the Sentinel forums offered up solutions from lining up the homeless to be shot, pesticiding them, and returning to the “troll busting 80’s”. As Bob Patton of the Human Rights Organization wrote in response, “The South will not rise again.” The continued flow of money and consumerism has become more important then human life or the basic rights we are all supposed to equally share in, or so it seems from the perspective of those that run our city. Every time we allow a right to be taken away from any class of people we are destroying our own rights. By allowing the government to make and keep such laws we only open the door for more.

Crippled Measure K ("Lowest Priority Enforcement Marijuana by SCPD")
    deadcowkid
    by deadcowkid  11-17-2007
Measure K was supposed to make the City Cops make marijuana busts the LOWEST possible priority. A key issue to for your agenda, after demanding that the Measure K Commission's powers be restored, is to clarify exactly who gets to examine the police marijuana bust records. It seems that it's the police and city attorney rather than your commission who are making the determination, according to the third paragraph from the bottom . This seems to me to directly subvert the intention of the Initiative (even the damaged one that came out of the May Rice court settlement).

This law may sound like no big deal, but think about you, like I was last week not feeling like shopping with your significant other and choose to wait in the car, as I did. After 15 minutes, this public space that you technically own, along with the rest of the public, is off limits to you. You are not allowed to be in your car, 30 min if disabled. This is aimed at the homeless, despite the lack of evidence for any violent crime happening there, it was a place people could get out of the rain using the overhangs, the homeless.
