POPSCivil Rights Struggle Continues for the Homeless On Saturday, Dec. 6, HUFF and supporters will host a “sleep-out” in symbolic protest of the ordinances and unfair treatment of homeless residents at the Human Rights Fair at the Louden Nelson Community Center. “The problem is you have a bunch of people who are a part of the Democratic Party who persuade themselves they are very liberal,” Norse said. “They vote for Obama, they are in favor of getting out of Iraq, they are members of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), but when it comes to the local issue of poverty and poor people, they are as bad as the Republicans.”

POPSThe Time to Beg is Over...The Time to Fight is Now! (PDF) New Flyer PROTEST OUTREACH FLYER From the Modesto Anarchist Crew - "New outreach flyer for those going out to protests, street battles, and roving occupations of public space against the passing of Proposition 8. Please print out, share, copy, discuss, give feedback, and use as organizing tools." "We don't and never have lived in a 'democratic society'-- we live in a class society. We live in a society of order givers and order takers, of bosses and bossed and rich and poor. The same group of thugs and lairs that claim to represent us, tries to to restrict OUR freedom to love, be with and sleep with whom we choose. These politicians pump up the fear."

POPSLA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit
US: LA Police Fail to Use Funds to Test Rape Kit "Why add to the suffering of rape victims by making them wait years to investigate and prosecute their cases -- or letting a prosecution go forward without this evidence?" said Sarah Tofte, a US Program researcher at Human Rights Watch who is researching the rape-kit backlog in Los Angeles and around the country. "The department needs to use its own budget and any future grants to make sure the job gets done." Timely testing of rape kits can be critical to bringing justice to sexual assault victims. It is often difficult to solve or prosecute a rape case effectively without this forensic evidence. Furthermore, under California law, there is no statute of limitations for bringing a case if the rape kit is tested within two years. But if it is not tested in that time frame, the statute of limitations is 10 years. "I want to thank Human Rights Watch for effectively pushing this issue into the forefront of the public arena," sai

POPSPlainclothes Police at the March for Our Lives in St. Paul (Theyt even had a pemit)
"There was nothing subtle about the undercovers. The guy on the right in the black with glasses approached my black-clad comrade and asked, "hey can I get a quick pictures". The response, "hell no." Then he asked me, "well can you please do me a favor?" To which I responded some of the same and we both pointed our fingers at him to call it out. Also to note, there was at least one person dressed in all black (hood and bandanna too) who was definitely wearing an ear piece. There was a woman not in your photos who was wearing black clothing (not bloc style but more plainclothes like, maybe sunglasses too, can't quite remember) who was walking by me, not looking directly but I could tell she had me in the peripheral vision. Camera was held down by her waist as if she were 'just carrying it', but I noticed that the lens was pointed near my face as she was nonchalantly walking. I definitely saw her click the shutter at this point. Did anyone else notice the "window washers" on the

POPSMarcella "Sali" Grace Eiler Raped and Murdered in Oaxaca
"Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca. Thursday, September 25 Justice for our sister Marcella Sali Grace! Brother and sisters, Our hearts are full of sadness and rage because our sister Sali was brutally raped and murdered 20 minutes from San Jose del Pacifico and up to this moment the Oaxacan Attorney General's Office, as is its custom, is not doing anything regarding the fact that there exist witnesses who have information to identify those responsible. Marcella Sali Grace was born in the United States, with a big heart in solidarity with just causes. She had many friend because she was always inclined to help, using her artistic talents to paint a banner or a wall or dancing Arabic dance to raise funds for the struggle, or putting on punk shows, or giving self-defense courses to the women because she knew very well how the men accosted them. This was one of her struggles, that women were free and respected. Sali was so involved in the struggle that she was an international accompan

POPSEnd the 15 min Panic Law - Restore Public Space - Petition It only takes a few moments to sign, and you do not have to live here to sign, as you may wish to park here. There are only two other cities with this unconstitutional law. We need your help by telling our City Council this is wrong. It takes only a moment of your time, comments are greatly appreciated, but not required. This law affects the disabled, poor and everyone if it is not selectively enforced.
3
POPSSign the petition and help us restore a consitutional right! This may not be your City, but as more cities enact such laws. The more our Constitution slowly means less and less. This law limits the time you can spend, even in your own car, in a public parking lot. You get a whole 15 minutes to park and retrieve your car or bike. No resting in your car, no reading, sleeping off too much to drink. There is no crime wave in the lots. The biggest thing the City is against is a peaceful drum circle and Food Not Bombs feeding as they have for years without violence or incident. This new law is selectively enforced. These kinds of laws lead to Free Speech Zones" which sadly, we already have. You need not live here to sign. People from all over come and park here. Please take a moment and sign this petition. It takes just a few moments.

POPSFun Questions to ask the Cops when being harrased for sleeping. These questions come from the time tested "Know Your Rights" role playing format, pioneered by Rico Thunder and Jason, who often teach Free School classes on your rights and how to use them. They role play in uniform. Free School is a concept used in Santa Cruz for everything from learning a foreign language, to knowing how to face the cops with the knowledge of your rights. The "ask to be taken to the Magistrate" is a great tool, just not on a Friday, or you may wait in jail until Monday. Start a free School in your town.

POPSSanta Cruz Sleeping Ban Debate Rages In subsequent stories--the Sentinel highlighted graffitists who painted “F#ck the Sleeping Ban” on City Hall. In their on-line forum subsequently, the bigots that rule over the Sentinel forums offered up solutions from lining up the homeless to be shot, pesticiding them, and returning to the “troll busting 80’s”. As Bob Patton of the Human Rights Organization wrote in response, “The South will not rise again.” The continued flow of money and consumerism has become more important then human life or the basic rights we are all supposed to equally share in, or so it seems from the perspective of those that run our city. Every time we allow a right to be taken away from any class of people we are destroying our own rights. By allowing the government to make and keep such laws we only open the door for more.
