About me
Writer, activist, musician. Enjoy random acts. My main interests are poverty issues, fighting against unconstitutional laws aimed at the poor such as sleeping bans, feedings bans, gentrification, use of public space.
Why I use Clipmarks
I hope to organize and or educate others around the issue of homelessness and poverty. I also enjoy clipping things that should be saved and shared. Love to hear of people banding together for a common cause.

End the Sleeping Ban the lawsuit begins

by deadcowkid  1-28-2008
Its time for this law to end. If you watch the debate I highly suggest you then listen to the highlights with commentary as the Mayor was wrong in nearly every fact and number he gave. Sleep is not a crime. In 2005 a man in a wheelchair died in front of our mayors house. NOT AGAIN. One of the lawyers explains the suit in a video at the source. A new site for the lawsuit.

Trash Orchestra Defends the Market Drum Circle
deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  1-17-2008
The Santa Cruz Trash Orchestra defends the Drum Circle and Food not Bombs defying the 15 min public parking lot ordinance. The next week the cops came back and wrote up many tickets. Next week they are coming back as well as many in the community to stop this madness. Do these look like terrorists to you? This law is aimed straight at the poor. There is a law for everything that can possibly happen in a public lot.

The Council believe they have to do this, a few days before xmas, in order to make way for new development. The new development will not be public housing. Additionally, they are doing this as FEMA begins vacating trailers, evicting people as million dollar homes are built above the flood line. This Country is headed going to loose its middle class if things do not change.

Fun Questions to ask the Cops when being harrased for sleeping.
deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  12-20-2007
These questions come from the time tested "Know Your Rights" role playing format, pioneered by Rico Thunder and Jason, who often teach Free School classes on your rights and how to use them. They role play in uniform. Free School is a concept used in Santa Cruz for everything from learning a foreign language, to knowing how to face the cops with the knowledge of your rights. The "ask to be taken to the Magistrate" is a great tool, just not on a Friday, or you may wait in jail until Monday. Start a free School in your town.

Activists Ask ACLU to Help End Sleeping Ban
deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  12-19-2007
The Sleeping Ban makes it illegal to sit, lie or sleep on ANY public property at night between the hours of 11:00pm to 8:00am. This applies to people in vehicles as well. You cannot even sleep on private property with permission in view , or out of view for more then three days. These are vets, kids, families, and human beings. We ask for the right not to sleep anywhere and everywhere, but somewhere. Safe Sleeping Zones for people sleeping in their cars with a code of conduct is cheaper to police and provides a safer environment. The Same can be used for people with no where to sleep. Again with strict rules about trash etc. Santa Cruz has been out of its affordable housing element for decades. People in wheel chairs cannot get into the armory, if there was a bed even available for them, We have 2000 homeless and only 160 beds on any given night. So the homeless are to stay awake all night and sleep in the day. We are loosing our humanity. 25% are vets.
