POPSDog saves master with heimlich maneuver It was given the dog of the year award at the dog and cat of the year awards given by the ASPCA. A cat was awarded a prize for waking someone up in a fire and there were awards given to people, but I'm sure not even many people would have the sense to do the Heimlich maneuver, and cats aren't heavy enough. Both of the award winners were saved after being left abandoned as a puppy and a kitten.

POPSSaving Kenya's orphan elephants I used to spend a lot of time at the Sheldrick elephant orphanage at Nairobi National Park. I now no longer live in Kenya, but the plight of African wildlife and the fight against poaching for ivory are still very close to my heart.

POPSHappy birthday! I'm thankful he was born. He inspired many: "...the only psychologist from whom I have anything to learn." - Nietzsche (1887) "Dostoevsky gives me more than any scientist, more than Gauss." - Einstein "Dostoevsky preaches the morality of the pariah, the morality of the slave." - Georg Brandes (1889) "...an author whose Christian sympathy is ordinarily devoted to human misery, sin, vice, the depths of lust and crime, rather than to nobility of body and soul" and described Notes from Underground as "...an awe- and terror-inspiring example of this sympathy." - Thomas Mann Kenneth Rexroth once described Dostoevsky as a "man of many messages, a man in whom the flesh was always troubled and sick and whose head was full of dying ideologies--at last the sun in the sky, the hot smell of a woman, the grass on the earth, the human meat on the bone, the farce of death" Turgenev on Dostoevsky: "...the nastiest Christian I've ever met".

POPSTea Party Bus Sponsor's Negligence Killed 23 Seniors In Fire, Blames Federal Government. Global Limo's owner Jim Maples even listed Global Charters as his employer when he gave $5000 to the RNC in 2004. *BusBank CEO Bill Maulsby blamed insufficient federal oversight, "We're not safety experts," he said. "We clearly need to depend on the federal government." In November 2006, a federal court convicted Maples and sentenced him to five years' probation for failure to maintain his buses. Investigators found 168 violations in Maples' four-bus fleet. The following month, US Fed News reported that BusBank had been awarded a Homeland Security contract worth up to $55 million. In June, BusBank and Global Limo settled out of court for a total of $11 million, a pittance when split between the families of the 23 victims and the patients who survived the crash. BusBank's legal troubles are far from over. According to one report, more lawsuits are getting underway this month.

POPSBushco wrote war pitch BEFORE knowing intel National Security Archive reports the Bush-Cheney White paper "justifying" the invasion was developed a full three months in advance of the intelligence data and analysis that should have served as the basis for that justification; then doctored NIE report to agree with their own White Paper. Only imminent threat mentioned was the possibility of Iraqi terrorism in USA if Saddam regime was threatened - but Bushco deleted it before giving the report to Congress.

POPSElephant orphanage (profiled on 60 Minutes) This place was profiled on the episode of 60 Minutes that aired tonight. They bring in young elephants orphaned by poachers, socialize them, bring them up, and release them into the wild. An important job in East Africa, I guess.

POPSMemorial Day - They Sacrificed Their Tomorrows For Us "We have a new President, Barack Obama, who was elected on a promise of change. For those few who wear the uniform of our country, however, nothing has changed. They continue to serve and sacrifice in wars in distant lands whose purpose and goals and eventual end are as fuzzy now as they were when they began in the dawn of this new century."

POPSObama's Grandmother Dies, on Eve of Election.
He called her a "quiet hero," like a million other quiet heros in our nation: not looking for the spotlight, going to work everyday, raising a family. His grandmother raised him. Without them he was pratically an orphan. He's noted for being a cool, unflappable man, but one or two tears had to fall in his last scheduled campaign event on the eve of the election. Some folks see a "heavy duty karma," here - things serious like in a Shakespeare tragedy: She did her job and now it was time for her to go; she didn't need to see the victory; what she saw was enough for her. Now, all his past is practically wiped away. All that 'stage of life,' over. At the end of today he begins a whole new life, as President of the United States of America. In Roman times when a big hero can home to worshiping crowds there was a servant assigned to stand behind him, whispering: "This will not last." On a day that should have been most joyful, he was his with great emotional loss: Yes...nothin

POPSLeft Behind: Soldiers Families Lots more at the link. Even though our government doesn't think much of it, I can tell you that it is a poignant part of my life. The main post chapel is less than a block away from my home and almost every single day cars overflow the parking lot for yet another Memorial Service and it is a heart-breaking scene to see, week after week, families and friends huddled together crying in front of the church. It's poignant to me since I have a soldier who is preparing to go back (Iraq, Season 3). Over the last 3 1/2 years I have had many many sleepless nights. So much so that I could not stomach even watching the local news, much less CNN. The so-called "family values" crowd needs to come out against the war for the simple fact they are always the ones preaching that children need TWO PARENTS (OF OPPOSITE SEX). We are heading to the point where that vision will no longer be a reality. And, I'm sure they will still blame Bill Clinton...

POPSWho is a guru? When the mind comes upon that silence...everything is a guru, the dead leaf on the dusty earth, the death of a dog on the street, the changing seasons, the tears of an orphan whose parents have been killed by terrorists, the helplessness of man, the heavy structure of sorrow that we all carry...everything and everyone is a guru...where else can a guru be found, if not in our day to day life. The territory of life, the mirror of relationship, the ephemeral, transient world where everything is dying, burning, perishing...do we need any other guru?

POPSForty Thousand Meteor Origins Across the Sky "Besides known meteor showers, eleven new showers were identified by new radiants on the sky from which meteors appear to flow. The meteor sky is ever changing, and it may be possible that new shower radiants will appear in the future. Research like this could also potentially identify previously unknown comets or asteroids that might one day pass close to the Earth. "

POPSKaradzic's Nation of Murderers It is tempting, in a world supposedly caught in a clash of civilizations, to think that the only way to survive is to have the Kardzics in your corner, fighting to protect people who look like you, talk like you, pray like you. That is certainly what the young Serbian men who burned flags and threw bottles in defense of Karadzic believe. The logic essentially goes like this: “He’s a son-of-a-bitch, but he’s our son-of-a-bitch. And in a world of sons-of-bitches, you better have the toughest son-of-a-bitch in your corner.” That’s misdirected rage talking, not reason. Misdirected rage applauds “our” murderers, believes they are necessary. It not only thinks the clash of civilizations is real, it needs the clash of civilizations to justify support of its murderers.
