Introducing the new Clipper Index page. Congrats to invictus , our number one all time clipper, and the other 24 of you in the Top 25. Please note that the page is a work in progress and we will continue to tweak the algorithm in the coming weeks. Also be on the lookout for new features on this page soon, like sorting by any of the column headers (e.g., most pops, alphabetically, etc.) I'm a modest 31. What's your rank?

Science's Alternative to an Intelligent Creator: the Multiverse Theory
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  11-20-2008    1
The idea that the universe was made just for us—known as the anthropic principle—debuted in 1973 when Brandon Carter, then a physicist at Cambridge University, spoke at a conference in Poland honoring Copernicus, the 16th-century astronomer who said that the sun, not Earth, was the hub of the universe. Carter proposed that a purely random assortment of laws would have left the universe dead and dark, and that life limits the values that physical constants can have. By placing life in the cosmic spotlight—at a meeting dedicated to Copernicus, no less—Carter was flying in the face of a scientific worldview that began nearly 500 years ago when the Polish astronomer dislodged Earth and humanity from center stage in the grand scheme of things. Carter proposed two interpretations of the anthropic principle. The “weak” anthropic principle simply says that we are living in a special time and place in the universe where life is possible. Life couldn’t have survived in the very early universe

Are you a zombie without your morning cup of coffee? Instead of using caffeine to stay awake, you can tweak the food you eat to get more energy. By making small changes to your eating patterns you can prevent morning grogginess and mid-afternoon slumps.

"The scene: A place with a crowd of people, or a view with moving traffic, or a landscape with running or moving water. Dim lighting, or twilight/dusk, is best." "The equipment: A camera that allows you to manually set the exposure time, a tripod if appropriate for the location (otherwise, a way to hold the camera completely still), and a remote shutter release or timer (hands-off shutter firing)."

The Nerd Girls: Smart, Techie and Feminine
    gingembre
    by gingembre  6-9-2008    4
"These girl geeks aren't social misfits; their identities don't hinge on outsider status. They may love all things sci-tech, but first and foremost they are girls—and they've made that part of their appeal...However they choose to geek out, they consciously tweak the two chief archetypes of geeks: that they're unattractive outcasts, and that they're male. " "Forty years ago women made up just 3 percent of science and engineering jobs; now they make up about 20 percent. That sounds promising, until you consider that women earn 56 percent of the degrees in those fields. A recent Center for Work-Life Policy study found that 52 percent of women leave those jobs, with 63 percent saying they experienced workplace harassment and more than half believing they needed to "act like a man" in order to succeed. In the past, women dealt with that reality in two ways: some buried their femininity, while others simply gave up their techie interests to appear more feminine." Go, girls!

Synthetic Viruses Could Explain Animal-to-Human Jumps
    Fast T friend
    by Fast T friend  11-25-2008
The new virus did not kill mice, however. Other genetic differences between the synthetic and natural strains can now be studied to learn what makes SARS so virulent, said Denison, and the technique applied to other viruses similar to SARS. These include the Ebola, Hanta, Nipah and Chikunguya viruses, all of which originated in animals and are lethal to people. "You could get to a point where, within a couple weeks of an epidemic being identified, you've already grown and generated viruses for the study of immune response," said Denison.

Algae, and their zebra, and quagga mussel hosts, have spread across the four lower lakes. They cannot find a simple solution, that will not affect associated ecosystems. Something like, if you tweak a system in the wrong way it can crash. If you don't tweak it, it will crash.
