POPSspirituality mandala by Peter de Jong part of a study of art and spirituality for my MFA, the history of art and artists is rich with imagery created for spiritual, healing and meditative purposes, a gift to the world that in this era is too bombarded with dark, negative or unhealthy imagery. As some scholars have hypothesized, “artists will save the world.” (this reference thanks to Jade Raybin) Author and artist Paul Levy notes in his article The Artist as Healer of the World,/url] As the groundbreaking psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology Carl Jung said, an artist is “a vehicle and moulder of the unconscious psychic life of mankind.” Many artists seek to break through the common, cartesian, or empirical imagery that assaults our eyes and minds, focusing their work on what they consider to be inner, archetypal, symbolic and even sacred imagery that speaks to our soul.
