Why 99.9% of men should be feminists
communicatrix
by communicatrix  5-14-2007    18
Wake up, kids. Feminism ain't about hating on men. It's about freeing ourselves, male and female, from The Man. It's about ending a system that's unfair, unhealthy and outright dangerous to most of the population, regardless of gender.

American fascism?
communicatrix
by communicatrix  1-8-2007    20
From a fascinating interview w/ author Chris Hedges (son of a Presbyterian minister and a Harvard Divinity School grad) about his new book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. This guy has a sense of perspective most of us don't, based on his experience as a war correspondent for the NYT. Not a religion-basher, but a realist who's incensed both with the manipulation of entire classes of people and the cluelessness of the left when it comes to awareness of the real issues we're grappling with as a society.

At first I thought it was overly simplistic, but for a sweeping overview, it's kind of frighteningly on the mark. Longish article by Salon ed-in-chief Joan Walsh reviewing Matt Bai's new book (about how the Democratic Party went to hell in a handbasket during the Bush years). Lots of interesting ideas; well worth a read.

Especially. ESPECIALLY!!!! Ugh. I was loathe to post this, partly b/c who needs this kind of depression-inducing lunacy the day after Christmas and partly b/c I was afraid it might not be the best introduction to the feminist, patriarchy-busting wonder that is Austin-based "Twisty." But at a recent holiday party, I overheard a distressing convo b/w a so-called feminist who was well-meaning, but an idjit, and so I'm taking it as a sign to get the right info out there sooner, rather than later. For those new to her site, "Twisty" is one of a rare breed of feminists who is not only sharp as a tack but hilarious, to boot. And I mean deeply, deeply smart and deeply, deeply hilarious. She also writes knowledgeably about important things like where to find good Mexican food and how to get through cancer with your sanity and wits intact, if not your breastal area. Read, read, read--especially before commenting. Caveat patriarchy...

RIP American suburbia
communicatrix
by communicatrix  4-23-2007    1
It is maddening, amusing and, ultimately, baffling that people continue to defend a way of life that is not only unsustainable, but insulating, deadening, and unpleasant. The end of the world will not be pretty, especially for those who've foolishly thrown in their lot with the consumption-at-a-price model of American suburbia. Read Kunstler now, while it's still readily available at the mall.

Seth Godin: These ARE the good old days
communicatrix
by communicatrix  12-27-2007
The quote is from an old post, but it's still true. Everything is horrible; everything is wonderful. I have a framed New Yorker cover of a glass half-full on my bathroom wall to remind me of this every day. It's over 10 years old, and came out on what would have been my mom's 58th birthday. That was a horrible year; that was a great year. This was a horrible year; this was a great year. May next year be horrible-great for you, too.

Cary Tennis gets into the head of an angry, 10-year-old boy to try and illustrate where a "good" stepmom is going off the rails. Great advice from Cary, plus a lot of interesting responses from readers. This stuff runs deep, people; as someone who has lived on both sides of the step divide, I can attest to that. Beware the step relationship, know your stuff if you choose to enter in, and please please please: children first. Remember, even if they can voice their deepest feelings (and usually, they can't), they weren't the ones who chose this state of affairs.
