The language here seems to imply that depression might cause allergies, but I'd contend that it most likely flows the other way. Even something as simple as sleep disturbances due to allergies could lead to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other disorders.

Two ideas...

1. Psyciatric disorders cause the nervous system to go haywire (being overprotective) and these allergies occur. Or...
2. Basically what ericskiff said:The allergies cause anxiety because they're disturbing and such.

I suffered constantly as a child. I had to eventually receive allergy shots (twice a week, 2 shots in each arm!) I've also always been pretty darn depressed. Here's the thing, though. I wonder if the reason kids with allergies are more emotionally disturbed is because other kids see them as "dorks" or "weirdos." I was always more brainy than the other kids and wasn't as "cool". I was always making this gross snorting sound (from the allergies) and missed school because I had stomach problems from swallowing phlegm. The kids treated me like absolute scum. The teachers eventually grew to hate me for missing school. No wonder I was depressed!

Oh I'm so sorry that you had to experience that. My 18 month old seems to be allergic to just about everything. During the summer she had to be dressed in pants and long sleeves because of her severe allergic reactions to grass even with medication. I'm trying to let her do the normal 18 months old experiences but it's hard when then she and I suffer for days following an exposure that she is medicated against. My oldest had horrible eczema that she outgrew thankfully at age 6. Prior to that she refused to wear shorts, skirts and dresses because she didn't want kids to see her itchy red scratchy legs. My daughter is now 7 and doesn't seem to suffer from any ill effects but it's sad tha...

This is exactly what CCHR has been claiming for decades - i.e. that 'mental illness' for which there are no scientific tests (don't fall for the 'chemical imbalance' bollocks) is really the manifestation of undiagnosed physical ailments such as allergic reactions and deficiencies (e.g. zinc and omega-3). But there's lots of money to be made from prescriptions for 'mental illness'. CCHR is the thorn in psycho-pharma's side because it is telling everyone that the emperor hasn't got any clothes on. There is tons of info on all this on their site http://www.cchr.org

Smoke a Pack a Day... or move to Cairo
apple white

This comes as no surprise to me. The entire time I was in Cairo I coughed, hacked and eye watered my way through each day. I asked my chain smoking friend why he bothered to smoke when he could just breathe the air. Worst pollution I personally have ever had to live through. Luckily enough I was able to escape by heading home, unlike most everyone else stuck there.
