I spent the day with a homeless woman recently. She gave food that she had received at a market research place to other homeless people in a small park where I live in Florida.

Isn't it a shame that in a Christian nation anyone ever think about passing such a law? Our calling is to take care of those that need help, whether it is self inflicted or not. We're not to be the judges of these, but their defenders. How can we look at ourselves in a mirror, when we allow such laws to stand on the books? May GOD forgive us and strengthen us to stand strong for our faith and those that can't stand on their own!!!

Its pretty amazing how this country works. Companies don't want to pay you a decent scale though they are raking in profits -- Health care is a mess for many.. etc.. Homelessness hits for various reasons: some are vets (should never happen), some are sick, divorce, health, to many too count.. What I'm trying to say is that its not always the fault of the person -- and NO ONE should ever feel they are above being homeless .. most of us are paycheck to paycheck.. These huge restaurants throw out food everyday -- whats wrong with helping the needy -- !!!

I agree. so much so, that when my ministry is setup to do so, we will be feeding those in need. This has been a plan for some time, but the funding to do so hasn't been there. It's a blessing to take care of those that need help and one that all Christians should look into!

I live in Orlando and my son and I visit various parks in and around the city including Eola Park which is located downtown. I personally have never even witnessed this group in action much less been bothered by what they are doing. I am, however, bothered by the number of homeless here and the apparent lack of compassion this city has for the underprivileged. Bravo to Eric and the rest of this group for having the courage to stand up to an unjust system even if it means jail time.

This aint a different species called homeless, these are people and anyone can end up homeless even the people who passed the law, what would they think of the law then!!
Just for the sake of an opposing view, shouldn't the pastor have been mindful of the law, and offered shelter instead? The law was passed with good intentions, however, the city didn't count on the law of unintended consequences kicking in, as it is wont to do....
I'm not from the States but where I live a similar project being organized by well-meaning restaurant owners was never implemented because of food safety issues. Because the restaurants were planning to give out leftovers, there was the problem of culpability. It would've been a great opportunity for our city government to show some spine and start a pilot project, especially since the homeless where I come from really have nothing---no food stamps or real welfare. The sad thing is, even without the project the homeless here scavenge the garbage thrown out by restaurants everyday.

Any official statistics available on the homeless population of the USA?
Or some serious research on how much the govt.has spent over the last ten years from it's social service budgets to ease the pain for these citizens....
A part of the taxes paid by the people should go to relief surely.... If philanthropy is voluntary, social welfare should be the Govt.'s duty....
Instead of spending on wars abroad, where you're not wanted, why don't you spend that money on your own citizens... you won't limit their numbers by starving them you know... Reforms in social welfare are necessary steps to take for any governmant.... or is it not the done thing in your country?

At this moment, I don't have any statistics. I do know that the numbers are much higher than the stats report. For so many of the homeless are reclusive and hidden from the 'official' stats.
