I heard of using Pig's dung for energy back in the 60's ... but this sounds like a better idea.

This may sound good, but the bugs will have to release carbon dioxide or methane or some other kind of "greenhouse gas" in the process of generating electricity from the cellulose. It wont just disappear.
Sorry, but its back to square one.

They don't say what the source of energy is.
Under anaerobic conditions bacteria will form methane - a potent greenhouse gas - which then can be burnt but this sounds like a battery style electron exchange.
CAn you imagine what the muck inside the "cell" would be like? The leakage of such a cell would be unpleasant if not a biological hazard.

A new breed of leaking batteries....

Is it something new? The gas generated from cow droppings has already been in use for some years among farmers in Shaoguan, a rural municipality in Guangdong province, China.

If cow droppings can provide energy, how about city sewage? I believe it is extremely promising in a city like New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok and Guangzhou...
