POPSMichael Crichton 1942 - 2008 But what a strange career the man had, from Harvard Medical School to the top of the book and movie charts to Hollywood blockbusters to odd best-selling jeremiads against Japanese businessmen and global warming activists. The consistent themes of his work are the consequences of man's own hubris and a thoroughgoing paranoia. Someone is always coming up with a brilliant notion in Crichton, and it always goes hideously kablooey. Bring dinosaurs back to life? Okay, but they'll escape and gobble you up. Organ transplants? Fine until the medical establishment starts harvesting them for profit. Robots? Forget about the robots: they'll shoot you down ("Westworld") or come after you with knives ("Runaway"). Plastic surgery, biotech implants, chasing tornadoes? All terrible, terrible ideas ("Looker," "The Terminal Man," "Twister").

POPSBlind man has TOOTH implanted into his eye "When Martin Jones met his wife four years ago he never imagined that one day he would get to see what she looked like. The 42-year-old builder was left blind after an accident at work more than a decade ago. But a remarkable operation - which implants part of his tooth in his eye - has now pierced his world of darkness."

POPSBodily Obsession I am not against plastic surgeries, yet this study is pointing to the enormous issues we have with this body that we wear. And it seems like that with the increase of availability and options we become more obsessed and occupied. why is it?

POPSVaginoplasty...need I say more? Its not enough that our pubic hair has to be a slave to fashion but somethings gone terribly wrong when people can't accept the uniqueness of possibly the most private, profound and primitive parts of their body. what the hell is this about?

POPSInventions - the 19th Century Many of these seem so much part of life, others seem so primitive in comparison to our time, and yet they were invented not so long ago. A full list on source.

POPSWhy the pursuit of happiness naturally includes melancholy "Obviously that opening is a bit hyperbolic for rhetorical effect. I will admit that. But it is, at the same time, a kind of expression of real danger. I think that being melancholy is an essential part of being a human being. I think to be a fully expressed human being you must be willing to delve into melancholy as much as into joy. If we try too hard to get rid of that melancholy it's almost like we're settling for a half-life."

POPSDoctors without borders Also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres they take health care where it is needed, anywhere in the world. Politics is not an issue. They provide medical care, and health services to people who are victims of war, starvation and disease, who otherwise would have had no hope.

POPSPlastic Surgery Below the Belt "The medicalization of sex,"; the idea that there is a physical right and wrong when it comes to all things sexual. "Promoting a very narrow definition of what women's genitals ought to look like — even for those women who don't want surgery, it harms them." Broadly speaking, these surgeries may meet the World Health Organization's criteria for female genital mutilation as "procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons." This kind of cosmetic surgery can interfere with advocates' ability to fight forced ritual mutilation in places like Africa. Designer vaginas "are considered reasons for not throwing stones, so to speak, at other cultures," she says. One of the most common reasons women cite in seeking the surgery, some doctors say, is a negative comment from a disgruntled sexual partner. The best way to start enjoying your body could be far simpler than surgery: "You may need a new boyfriend."

POPSFor $100, you too can look like Jessica Simpson Man, when will the pendulum shift away from people idolizing celebrity? And when will this absurd portrayal of women stop? Under every picture in magazines, there should be a disclaimer that states, "This woman is the product of extensive, expensive plastic surgery and complex airbrushing. Do not expect to look like this or be sad that you don't. It's not real."

POPSBubble-wrap Baby Survives He was transferred by air ambulance to the Queen Mother Hospital in Glasgow to receive specialist care. After 24 hours, doctors said his chance of survival had increased and, on the fourth day, Mrs Craig was allowed to hold her son for the first time. She said: 'He felt so light it was just like holding a ball of wool. 'His skin was completely see-through and he was covered in wires and tubes, keeping him alive. But every day that he hung on he gave us more hope.' At ten weeks he had laser eye surgery to stop him going blind as the blood vessels in his eyes hadn't developed properly. After 17 weeks in hospital, when Gregor had reached 7lb, he was allowed home. He has to have daily oxygen, and his parents had to learn how to resuscitate him if necessary. Mrs Craig said: 'He is now a happy six-month-old and incredibly all he seems to have is some slight hearing problems. It's a small price to pay for having him here with us.'

POPSSaint Orlan: ultimate body art "If lipstick is an impression only for the Object, do feminists dream of the withering away of that second skin of make-up? But if it also carries a woman's potential for impressing/painting on the Object, the lover's lips or collar, what then? Will a feminist ever write a Milneresque tract:'On Not Being Able to Not Paint One's Lips':" -Kalu Singh

POPSLucky Gap There is nothing sexier in my mind than the little gap between the two front teeth. Maybe it's the imperfection that makes it so deliciously perfect to me, or maybe it's the person behind the smile :)

POPSDoctor Used Human Fat from Liposuction as Biofuel said the whole scheme could be a hoax inspired by the film Fight Club, in which Brad Pitt’s character Tyler Durden uses waste from liposuction to make soap. Dr Bittner left a message on his clinic’s website on November 20 to tell clients he was moving to South America to volunteer at a small clinic “where I can help those most in need.”
